My older liberal minded sister, she's in her 50's, has watched SNL for decades and thinks it's still funny. She constantly is sending me video clips of various skits.
95% of the time, they're terrible. I don't know what she finds humorous in SNL. Maybe the Democratic leaning humor?

Watched for Will Farrell and regardless of ones political leaning it just wasn't funny.
The 70's cast and many of the 80's / 90's shows are just hard to beat.

It's still on the air because NBC knows that it will always come back when they get the cast right.
It sucks for 3-4 years, then they get a good cast and it's good for 2-3. The cast blows up, NBC makes a pile of money off them, stars ditch for a movie career, and the cast goes back to sucking for 3-4 years.
There are SNL alums all over tv and movies who are legitimately funny and creative. They didn't stop being funny when they were on SNL, it stopped being funny when they left.

SNL has always been hit or miss, even during the Belushi days. In the right settings, Will Farrell can be very funny, but he does overdo the silliness. Eddie Murphy is the funniest SNL'r of all time IMO.

Watched last night for first time in many many years bc Chris Stapleton and agree it just wasn’t funny. And I had high hopes bc of Farrell. Suprised anyone still watches.

When Hader & Wiig left that really hurt SNL. Those were huge losses...Kate McKinnon has her moments, but the current cast is seriously lacking. And all that political shite needs to just go away. It's no longer edgy or funny.

Yes, no one ever liked the current cast. Yesteryear was always glorious. And then some old folk will inevitably chime in about Belushi and Ackroyd.
It’s always been political, but yes it always leans liberal. It does seem a bit heavy handed re Trump. It’s like every late night and comedy show is in a trump bashing contest.
They didn’t make fun of Obama much. He was loved but he was also boring compared to trump.

Exactly. Of course Obama did get too much of a pass from the media in general for 8 years, but in terms of comedic value, he's not nearly as easy to mock and make fun of in a humorous way as Trump is. Let's just be honest.
I haven't watched much SNL lately and when I do it's in bits and pieces. It's pretty hit or miss for me. Obviously nowhere near as good as the 90's and early 00's but it's not because they incorporate politics. Politics have been central to SNL since day 1.

I like Heidi Gardner in the new cast. She has promise.
She's had a couple of funny roles in skits and on the news.

Ferrell has his run and it was glorious, but it was like watching a washed up guy last night
