It clearly doesn't look like a NOMOS, but as a sharp looking pretentious watch it looks great on people's wrist. Double his budget, but it's a really chill piece that stands up to anything in the room. IMO.

A manual winding NOMOS would be really nice to own.

Nomos watches are great. I love what the company stands for. Their movements are in-house, and well finished - they are not necessarily on the cutting edge of movement design (although their swing system is a great innovation), but for the price point, Nomos is difficult to beat.

However, you have to like the aesthetic. I find Nomos a bit cold. I am still interested in one, but I am a bit on the fence.

With watches, there is a big different between $3k and $5k. As an initial matter, what kind of watch do you want? Dress? Sport? Some sort of hybrid? That is a big consideration. If you are looking at sport watches, I think the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual is an outstanding option (and I am not a Rolex fanboy). You can pick one up new from DavidSW for under $5k (with boxes and papers). An Omega Speedmaster is also a great choice, in my opinion. If you are looking for dress, I would look at a pre-loved JLC. I bought my first JLC, a Master Control, for well under $5k (I think ~$3k). I sold it to fund my MUT Moon. But it was a fantastic watch, and I am still sad that I no longer own it. $5k can take you a LONG ways in the pre-used arena.

One minor addition. Although I am sometimes drawn to more "esoteric" or "logical watches" (i.e., a Nomos makes far more "sense" horologically speaking that a Tag), you have to keep in mind the emotional side of a watch purchase. I am drawn to the FPJ Chrono Bleu - however, it is not, and never will be, a Patek. And it may not scratch the Patek itch. Similarly, an Omega PO is not a Rolex Sub. Even though Omega's co-axial movement may be superior to the Cal. 3150, or even though the Omega may be better finished, it will not "replace" a Rolex if you want a Rolex. If I could offer a recommendation. Whatever you choose, put it as the background on your computer for two months. If you still like it, then go for it. If not, keep searching.

There are a litany of great watches in that range - and looking is at least half the fun. I'm going to echo everything MemphisGrizzliesFan said. Even though his disdain for current Patek is crazy (the new 5327 is perfect).

Early on I set my sights on Omega but I ended up with a totally different watch than I originally sought because I browsed the classifieds on WUS, Rolex Forums and TimeZone for months and learned what all was out there. (I got a Planet Ocean after originally searching for a Speedmaster).

Download the Watchrecon app on your phone, it's an aggregator of the big classified sites. That will allow you to see what you like and don't like to narrow things down. It organizes brands by popularity, so you can look at companies you'd never know to search.

That said, I'd get a used Rolex Explorer I 214270 and be done with it. Prices are very buyer-friendly right now because they came out with a new one in 2016 with a minute hand that's about a millimeter longer than the old one.

I started with a Planet Ocean, sold it for a Sub, realized the Omega was my perfect watch, so I sold the Rolex and found another PO. The whole endeavor was very, very expensive. I definitely recommend making the watch you choose your desktop for a while.
