Does anyone know why Tokyo wasn’t the primary target?
They wanted a relatively untouched city so the power of the new weapons would be clear. Tokyo didn't fit the bill.

.....I suspect you’re the kind of guy that also thinks the moon landings never actually happened.

Spot on.
The world was a radically different place with much uncertainty and a much more hard nosed view (deservedly so) of Japan than is easily comprehended today.
Heck, Truman's press release on Hiroshima gives great context:
Pretty heavy handed compared to Kumbaya shite today.

Heck, Truman's press release on Hiroshima gives great context:
quote:
The Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold. And the end is not yet. With this bomb we have now added a new and revolutionary increase in destruction to supplement the growing power of our armed forces. In their present form these bombs are now in production and even more powerful forms are in development.
It is an atomic bomb. It is a harnessing of the basic power of the universe. The force from which the sun draws its power has been loosed against those who brought war to the Far East.
***
We are now prepared to obliterate more rapidly and completely every productive enterprise the Japanese have above ground in any city. We shall destroy their docks, their factories, and their communications. Let there be no mistake; we shall completely destroy Japan's power to make war.
It was to spare the Japanese people from utter destruction that the ultimatum of July 26 was issued at Potsdam. Their leaders promptly rejected that ultimatum. If they do not now accept our terms they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth. Behind this air attack will follow sea and land forces in such numbers and power as they have not yet seen and with the fighting skill of which they are already well aware.

Pretty heavy handed compared to Kumbaya shite today.

Dunno but those pacifist Democrats sure do like dropping bombs.

I think one interesting aspect of this issue that is being forgotten is the mind set of the military at that time.
Exactly.. My Father was in Europe for WW2. He talked about the wait for his deployment papers to go to the Pacific. When the news broke that the US dropped the bomb(s) the feeling was indescribable that he was going home. Americans really really hated the Japanese. It was understood, as children, that we not bring up Japan in front of my Grandmother. She would get real upset and go on a tirade about the sneaky Japs.

my grandfather served in wwii and was very liberal/open-minded for his time, but no one ever talked about japs around him

another thing to consider is the general political climate of the world at bat time.
a nuke was getting dropped on somebody by somebody else.
it was coming.
if it wasn’t us dropping on them during WWII, then it may well have been the Russians dropping one on us during the Cuban Missile crisis.
but them having seen us drop one already, they were much more reluctant to use one against us and yet still came really close to doing so).
so to answer your question i think actually takes two answers.
was it necessary for us to use one? yes i think it ultimately was in the grand scheme of things.
was it necessary for Japan to be the recipient? maybe not. we may very well have been able to finish them off without it.
but i think showing one to not just the russians, but the entire planet, was the right move for the long term safety and well being of our country.
and the Japanese brought the misfortune upon themselves of being a readily available and excusable target for the bombs.
so they got them.
Europe was a no go because they Germans had already bowed down. Plus too many allies in too tight of an area for that to be a serious consideration.
Japan being an island, and being the country that attacked us first, was both geographically and politically the ideal choice.

Yes, communism was spreading through Asia. You think they would have just let us set up shop reform and demilitarized their country for the hell of it? It's prob the reason why those sneaky fricks have never tried anything again.

Frick them. Have you ever read what those bastards did to American soldiers. I've heard from eyewitness accounts, my grandfather and great uncle. Both said they'd dropped two more on them if we'd had them. If you say "what about the civilians?", brainwashed or not they were right up in the middle of it. Screw them.

Ended the war and prevented a significant amount of american casualties. Necessary, no we would have still won the pacific front, but we damn sure did it faster with the bombs.

The destruction and loss of life from just the first one was something no one had seen before, it was something previously relegated to only science fiction, an extreme natural disaster or the wrath of an angry god.
Tens of thousands of people died immediately just from Little Boy hitting Hiroshima. Think about that: tens of thousands of lives lost in an instant.
Yet even with such horribly awe-inspiring power and destruction Japan refused to surrender.
The goal of war is to beat your enemy into submission as quickly as possible. This is a truism that ranges from a schoolground fight between two kids to major, world-encompassing wars between countries. That Japan had to be bombed with such horrific force not once but twice before surrendering is itself the fact that answers your question: yes, the bombing of both were necessary to ending the war as quickly as possible.
