same thing in New Iberia. City rezoned a piece of property just for this. WalMart bough and demolished a home, and a big brick church. Right across from WalGreen's, CVS, Chevron station, and a locally owned supermarket.

Yes, you can. They won't save 1/3. And, why do you want to give any of your money to Walmart? You can afford to shop somewhere else, and are you so cheap you won't support local businesses?
You do know that Walmart wages are subsidized by the taxpayers, as many Walmart employees receive government benefits. Yes, they pay so low that many of their employees are taxpayer subsidized.

Your view is very simplistic given the varying financial situations people are in, even within a small town.

Not an apt comparison - those are examples of technology replacing businesses.
Walmart is an example of a monopoly squashing competitors and then leaving the town empty handed. Think the big monopolies at the turn of the century and the robber barons.

I think Walmart would love to continue to stay open if it made $$ sense. But since it clearly doesn't, they aren't to going to operate at a loss just because. Now some other store has a brand new opportunity to supply the locals with their groceries. It sounds like you don't like Walmart so I don't know why you would be displeased with them leaving.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart. However, I do know what it's like to live in a very small community where the only store lacks any kind diversity as far as inventory is concerned and is also very expensive.
Wal-Mart can go to a distributor and get wholesale prices at a much cheaper price than a mom-and-pop store, and can offer prices much lower than other stores because of that. If you think Wal-Mart's prices aren't cheaper, you're nuts.

I used to work at Wal-Mart doing oil changes, tires, etc. I know what they pay, and I've lived off of that amount without any government help. I don't know how many of their employees are on government assistance, nor do I care, because that isn't what we're talking about here. We're talking about Wal-Mart's ability to provide a greater selection of products at a lower price, which is why they steal the business of the local stores.

It could easily be serviced by a wholesaler based out of Dallas. A local independent will jump on the opportunity if there's one available.
