don't know how many of their employees are on government assistance, nor do I care, because that isn't what we're talking about here. We're talking about Wal-Mart's ability to provide a greater selection of products at a lower price,

But maybe part of the reason Walmarts prices are low is that the taxpayers subsidize it's labor costs.

I think wal mart is just taking advantage of the American Dream. Is it fair ??? How can it not be???? If I owned a buisiness and had a chance to take out the competition I would.

How hard is it for people to not shop at walmart and choose other local owned stores? The other grocery store was still open for several months after the Neighborhood Market was opened, so the community could of still supported them. Now they are fricked and it is the communities fault. And some of walmarts, but damn you guys ain't guy to buy your cheap shite there.

I'm lucky enough to live close enough to both Rouse's and NuNu's, I don't remember the last time I've been inside a WalMart.

Are you dense? There is no innovation in the example that you are comparing these to. Just a large corporation selling products at a loss until they run another business out, then leaving a community with nothing behind but the havoc that they caused.

No, I'm scattered.

Innovation does not necessarily mean technological replacement. It could also come in the form of, well, you know, effective business practices.

But the comparison is apt in that people do, in fact, adapt to changes in the marketplace, and more importantly, the market forces will be the fastest way to remedy this situation.

We're all assuming that the reason for the bitching about Walmart is not simply a matter of personal venting, but a part of the chorus of voices calling for some type of governmental response to "fix" the Walmart "problem".

That's just it - the fix is always worse than the problem.

Additionally, Walmart is no more guilty of taking advantage of people than any other entity.

Walmart opened a store on one end of the main street in Covington in the 1980s and killed many of the stores on the street. Then, Walmart moved further out of town to a cheaper spot and then again a third time. Downtown Covington was devastated. Many of the mom and pop stores that had been there for decades closed.

But a funny thing happened. A different sort of commerce appeared. The stores were more artisan and upscale. Even the guy who ran Foxhole Army Surplus shut his doors and moved to the Phillippines with his wife because his rent was outrageous.

Was the new Covington better? Maybe, maybe not but Walmart moving was not the end of the world.

You never hear anyone say "the local residents put the mom and pop out of business because they quit shopping there". It's always Walmart's fault or Target's fault, etc. If the community as a whole felt so strongly about mom and pop they wouldnt go to Walmart for the cheaper price.
