Walmart is a private company if you don’t like them filming you shop elsewhere.

I worked in walmart AP in bentonville for several years, they use Ai to predict fake scans, missed scans, etc. It will seem to be random to the customer, but for whatever reason the system will think that a missed scan has taken place, like maybe your hands going out of camera sight for too long/too often.
people always , always take it personally like the people making 14 dollars an hour are calling them thieves, when it is literally just the system doing it. Besides, 9 times out of 10 the employees just hits OK and everyone moves on.

No, they're not doing it for some nefarious purpose, they're just trying to curb theft. As a bonus, films of Walmart checkouts have been used to help solve a fair number of murder cases. Winning.

1 million stolen items adds up.
Then why have self check outs?
You can cut multiple cashiers and hire 1 bag checker.

That and they cater to your tastes with those tuck friendly swimsuits.

Everything you have to hassle with like this is due to the lowest rung of people in our society. Your quarrel is with that group.

As a trucker, we would get random drug tests. I didn't like it but I realized that it might prevent a few dope heads from killing someone on the highway.

It is the condition of the world and we barely make the list comparatively speaking.
Cities of China* — 700m cameras to 1.42bn people = 494.25 cameras per 1,000 people
Hyderabad, India — 900,000 cameras for 11,337,900 people = 79.38 cameras per 1,000 people
Indore, India – 251,500 cameras per 3,482,830 people = 72.21 cameras per 1,000 people
Bangalore, India – 585,284 cameras for 14,395,400 people = 40.66 cameras per 1,000 people
Lahore, Pakistan – 410,297 cameras for 14,825,800 people = 27.67 cameras per 1,000 people
Seoul, South Korea – 243,426 cameras for 10,025,800 people = 24.28 cameras per 1,000 people
Moscow, Russia – 250,000 cameras for 12,737,400 people = 19.63 cameras per 1,000 people
Kabul, Afghanistan – 90,000 cameras for 4,877,020 people = 18.45 cameras per 1,000 people
Singapore, Singapore — 112,999 cameras for 6,157,270 people = 18.35 cameras per 1,000 people
St. Petersburg, Russia — 102,000 cameras for 5,597,340 people = 18.22 cameras per 1,000 people
Cameras in London are legendary.

Walmart sucks for other reasons but a culture of criminality is to blame.
To think Walmart prefers to hire extra people to monitor checkouts, check receipts, and unlock cabinets with high theft items is silly.
They have backed off the self checkouts for high theft locations like the one on Tchoupitoulas in New Orleans, Only a handful for 15 items or less.

Sometimes there is inconvenience to make sure crimes dont occur. It is annoying, but my annoyance is more that the thieves are walking around free and not for Walmart trying to prevent it.

Most stores do not even try to prevent it anymore. They know they can write off the losses and get paid anyway.

I was in Galveston and forgot to bring my shaving kit so I walked in to buy the cheapest equate brand disposablerazor - it was *one* dollar (no joke).
They are locked up. The entire razor section is locked up, and this includes the $1 equate brand models. So you have to stand in line (and there was a line) at a certain desk to get a woman to come unlock it for you. Once you get it you go to the front of the store and stand in another line to pay for it. I understand this process for $150 electric razors. But equate brand? wtf. I got so irritated I walked out. It's actually offensive.
