I live in Texas. It's hot as hell every summer in Texas. I understand at least one reason it is not on the list.

Assuming they aren't sleeping outside or exposed to the elements often, that's not that a big concern.

Besides Colorado has some of the healthiest people in the country.

Wyoming would be a pretty tough place to live once you are on blood thinners

I’m finding a lot of people like myself who are becoming more concerned about a harsh summer than a cold winter. Especially now that many places seem to be experiencing more mild winters.

The healthcare angle is real. The people who claim they want to retire in the middle of no where and far from other people are crazy. You need to have hospitals and medical services within reach.

The requirements for my search became a medium sized city, with an airport close by, at least one college, a walkable downtown, and a mild summer.

Surprised Louisiana was able to beat out New York. Even though NY has a dogshit political climate and COL is through the roof, their healthcare is still light years ahead of what Louisiana has and it’s not even close.

Affordability is not rated high enough. I moved from VA to TN. VA has a lot to do, but taxes are better in TN and is easier on my wallet.

TN is a very tax friendly state for workers but not retirees. They have a high sales tax and high taxes on retirement income, dividends, etc. No state income tax is great when you're working but doesn't mean squat if you are retired. The focus shifts from what you make to what you spend.

Also states like California are high tax states for younger workers but not as bad for retirees as you might think. If you are old and bought a house in California a long time ago you are probably paying very little property tax thanks to Proposition 13. There are old people in California living in houses they bought in the 70s that are now worth over a million dollars but they only pay $3000 in property tax and they get to take advantage of other generous "welfare" benefits due to no income.

But the REAL answer to this question is this:

The BEST state to retire in is the one where your kids, grandkids and best friends live. It's that simple. The older you get the more important that social net becomes. Watching your grandkids grow up becomes your reason for living. And your children will be the ones who help care for you and gently walk you towards the cemetery. All your little quirks, habits and beliefs....the older you get the more you realize that it's only those precious few best friends in your life that care. All of the acquaintances, coworkers, group members really can't be bothered and that gets more and more apparent as you age.

When did they stop making warm clothes for old people?

Texas Hill Country where I am is great...except.

Summers are hell when it doesn't rain. And the biggie is property tax.

I don't like long winters so most of the north is out for year round.

I think Tenn or NW Ark would be cool, but currently kinda stuck and couldn't move if I wanted to.

I don't care what states like Miss tax structures are. Most of the South sucks.

I don’t agree with you on that. You should retire in a state that you WANT to retire in and know what entices you to retire in that state. Family should not be the number one reason why you retire in a state, especially if it’s a shithole that ranks dead last in nearly every metric of living.

I'd rather spend almost all of my retirement money paying to have people come visit me than have to live day to day in some shithole LA. I could do Lafayette but that's about the only place in the entire state I don't despise.

Have you seen what women raised in Colorado look like in their late 30's through early 50’s? It turns their facial skin leathery and cracked in the dry cold. They may be healthy, but age more rapidly than southern women.

Mississippi is much better than the chart would suggest. No state income tax on retirement income, lower housing costs, a lot of good land, and if you are near somewhere with a college, like Hattiesburg, there are education classes and theater shows, sports, etc., and all are inexpensive.

There ain't squat for good healthcare, but there has to be a trade off somewhere.

I think that is a generational thing with people that spent lots of times outdoors in the 1970’s -1990’s. The people turning 30 now have avoided the sun despite being outdoors often.

I've started to notice Wisconsin is always right in the middle of these rankings. We aren't the fattest or stupidest of people, nor do we live in the best, cheapest, or most expensive place. Wisconsin is that bowl of porridge that is just right.

Even Lafayette has its limitations. I had a friend who was living in Lafayette and got diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had to drive 3 and a half hours to MD Anderson in Houston to get Proton B therapy every week for 5 months. The healthcare is dogshit there.

You’re forgetting that Mississippi is the murder capital of the country and has the highest number of blacks living on welfare, although still not as much as Louisiana.
