This is ONE example of ONE person in ONE profession that had the capability to destroy many other people due to mental illness. If the stigma fades and the ability to seek treatment was easier, we could be a better society.
I'm not for taxes, but feel this one needs to pass with flying colors. Everyone should be telling their family and friends to vote yes to this one particular bill. For $18/year (per family) you could be helping out a friend, neighbor or coworker and never even realize it. VOTE YES FOR MENTAL HEALTH BILL (only $18/year).

Edited to add that Yes, I do think we need more mental institutions opened. I also believe some individuals should be placed permanently in these places, others can go for short term "treatment" and be released. Some families cannot safely take care of these individuals no matter how much they try. Where are we going to get the money to run these "so called" mental institutions that were closed by Regan without assistance from the government? Yeah, I'd definitely like to see them take the tax dollars from other places but if we have to wait for that, we may be waiting a very long time. I personally would be willing to pay my $18/year to contribute to a mental institution that family members would know their loved ones were safely housed and no longer a threat to themselves or our community.

And don't tell me to put this on the politics board. I don't venture over there and am specifically talking to the non-political people.

maybe airlines shouldn’t leave the keys in their plane?
And we used to commit people with mental health issues to state wards. Then feel good leftists bitched and had them shut down. Now you want us all to pony up again.
Here’s a thought. Go frick yourself.

frick that. When government starts being a good steward of the money I already give them then we can talk about more. They spend like a bunch of crackheads on payday and then whine when they don’t have enough for something important. No.

the ability to seek treatment

You've chosen a phrase that appears to be important but which has a wiggle word in it. That word? treatment.

Treatment is often not a cure. Treatment often isn't even care. Treatment might step on the 'rights' of the patient. Treatment varies from Dr. to Dr. to Dr. because when treatment doesn't cure, nobody knows what to do, when to do it, or how to do it.

A whole lot of our mass murderers have seen medical professionals. Some have possibly fooled medical professionals. Some have fooled lots of people.

There are no easy answers but tossing money at a problem in a frustrated panic isn't one of them.

Doctors get people addicted to opiods by the thousands every year.

Id say thats more dangerous and a bigger problem than the .00000001% that could steal a plane

Hell no. The mental health industry is damn near a scam, anyway. I don't think most psychologists or psychiatrists know anymore about what's going on inside someone's head than my garbageman.

And what is this horsecrap about mental illness having a stigma? Every lazy mother can't wait to get themselves or their kids diagnosed with some disorder or malady. That way they can either explain away their poor parenting or get little Johnny medicated so they don't have to actually do any parenting. Seems to me these Facebook mommies wear their supposed psych "conditions" like a badge of honor.

M H treatment would not have prevented this incident. Guy even admitted he did not know until now that he had a few screws loose.

Not saying we do not need better MH treatment but all this "let's throw money at it" every time something happens is just silly.

Funny that you said these 2 statements back to back without realizing that IS the stigma. People who are actually mentally ill get lumped in with the folks you just described, hence, the stigma.

That fricking pile of dis-function we call government is incapable of solving any problems, much less those that can be solved for $18/ month
