I do this, too, but my tip was changed once at Chili’s and then one time at BJ’s - there was a $7 difference bw my receipt and what was charged to the account - so I called and the manager pulled their copy of the receipt and he said I had broken a glass and was charged for it - and I said - really? And he was like ‘yeah, that’s dumb, we will refund it

Not $600 but I'm sure this happens all the time with smaller amounts no one notices because plenty of people don't check their statements.

I gave a cash tip at Applebees and they added a 3 dollar tip to the bill. That’s how you do it, not worth the aggravation of challenging it. I sent a complaint but didn’t bother responding to their follow up, just acknowledging I noticed it. Learned not to give cash tips when I thought it was appreciated.

No specific insight on this case, but I would guess the waitress had hustled up some larger tips from patrons in the past--maybe someone adding a smooth hundred trying to act like a baller. She figured out management didn't flag a voluntary 400% tip and decided to take it one step farther on her own.

Stupidest of stupid as far as a criminal act goes--very low chance of getting away with that much cash on a single transaction.

My own "streetwise" move is to always take the receipt and the duplicate customer copy--only leaving the signed receipt with the tip amount filled in. Leaving the duplicate is an invitation for such chicanery and shenanigans.

My credit card company gives me a notice if a tip is over a certain amount/percentage (25% I think) and asks me to review and confirm the tip amount is correct. I have all sorts of automations/alerts set up like that because I honestly do not go back and carefully look at my cc statement and match it with receipts/what I know I spent.

So even your credit card company knows you’re cheap. That’s cool.

Was in Spain recently. They do it right, no tipping

That's pretty much all of Europe. When we go we leave a round up tip which is greatly appreciated. 98 euro tab? Drop a hundred and get many thanks for the extra.

Tipping is so stupid

I don't mind tipping a waiter who does good work. What I hate is this trend now where you go to get takeout and the payment terminal asks you for a tip. A tip for someone who did no work at all.

So the food preparer did not work? Strange.

You do understand that many tips on credit cards are pooled, right?

No one is dumb enough to do something like this unless they are really, really inebriated.

I'd wager you'd have to be at minimum a hundred millionaire in order for you to either (a)not notice $600 missing from your account. Or (b)not care that $600 is missing from your account.
But even then, for someone that rich, they are likely not eating at that restaurant to begin with.

If she did that to Gayle Benson or Mr. Gary I bet they'd return accompanied
by the cops within an hour.

Fired a girl for this years ago. She would only add $5-$20 but would do it enough. We didn’t catch on until about 6 months in when someone called and reported it.

I forget what the final amount was but it was a hell of a lot more than $600

I always write “cash” in the tip section whenever I pay card and tip cash for this exact reason.
