WAFB exploiting death of Sigma Chi

Watched the news segment the other day about the kid that OD'd recently in Sigma Chi at LSU. Within the WAFB report with the incomparable Cheryl Mercedes, they went into everything they found at the kid's house which was a bunch of drug stuff which I won't go into detail about as I feel that would be hypocritical to my point. They dug up all the crap they could find about this kid and made it public to the entire fricking greater Baton Rouge area and all I could think to myself was how that guy's parents felt seeing that report. It didn't feel like news, it felt like exploiting the death of a child to increase ratings.
I've made peace with the fact that the media is about as slimy as it gets, but for those that saw the report, am I way off base? Couldn't the report have ended with saying that a kid died instead of airing all his dirty laundry on air (at one point the cameras were in his house showing the drug paraphernalia so I think it might have been his figurative and literal dirty laundry in the camera shot)? Didn't post a link because I didn't want to give the bastards the clicks, if you want to see the report look it up yourself.

You said it right there. The media is as slimy as it gets. Never be surprised at what those piece of shite whores will do for a click.

Because I'm sure 1000 little johnnies were watching that report saying damn better never do the drugs. Don't be such an assclown

I don't disagree that they are exploiting his death for their own news cycle but he wasn't a kid. They could've easily used his story as a cautionary tale of the opiate drug problem continuing its path through all segments of the populace

Wonder how it would have been handled if the deceased had been an LSU athlete instead?

In 1985/86 I was a Lambda Chi at LSU. We had a "pledge" named Chuck, a troubled kid. Before he was initiated, he took a shotgun, and blew his head off in a Tiger Plaza Apartment. We were all shocked.
A few weeks later, the Baton Rouge Advocate ran a front page Sunday edition, above-the-fold human interest piece (two more FULL pages on pages 8 and 9 etc) that basically blamed the fraternity for his death. How he was just a poor working class kid from Morgan City suddenly placed in harm's way by the rich (lol) Frat stars who mocked him and drove him to suicide. I had like $14 to my name and the same for most of the guys who were all typical S Louisiana kids.
In 1987 someone burned the house down while we were in it. The media and all the campus SJW-types (Jerry Schumacher and those " lives of quiet desperation"failed at life guys) made a big deal that we had a random black lawn jockey on the house. And thus essentially deserved our rich white guy fates.
Yesterday America watched the media roll out a prepackaged Narrative that fit their agenda. It was about the 10,000th display of the same thing. The lesson is that the last people to really examine the TRUTH of any particular thing are journalists. And they approach stories as moral crusaders and project their mediocrity upon the stories they present. Never getting within a mile of THE TRUTH, and not giving a shite.

Nice spin. He was an adult who made shitty choices and paid dearly for it. Also, didn't his frat bros continue doing hard drugs in the house AFTER their friend died of an overdose? Not a whole lot of sympathy here.

With that kind of undeserved moral superiority sounds like you should be working for WAFB, I'll send you a job app if you can get off your high horse long enough to fill it out. Didn't argue that he made some shitty choices. Merely pointing out that I feel the report when way too far and focused more on the personal mistakes of one individual than the implications his choices had on the fraternity. They could have said a kid OD'd which led to an investigation of Sigma Chi. Instead, they showed photographs of his room and all the crap that brought about his death just so a few more airheads like you would watch. The kid is dead, let him rest; but hey, I still believe in a modicum of personal privacy which is apparently very outdated in today's day and age.

So was it or was it not part of the story? I'd say it is relevant to the story, even if it makes you SJW types uncomfortable.

What an original phrase? has that been used on this board yet?

so what? Doesn't lessen the validity of his point.
OP, the media won't even call the San Bernardino shooters Muslims or terrorists. They will do anything to further their agenda and exploit a tragedy. they are the most abhorrent of individuals.

Hey all I did was start a thread on the Gameday where y'all packed up and left before the game. It was whacked out of respect when we were informed of the reason.
But to be fair, I'm curious as hell when a college kid OD's. That is news to us parents in BR who preach to our kids "stay in school if you don't wanna end up like (points to bum on side of road or news about drugged out youths)."

People need to be made aware of these things instead of just sweeping them under the rug.
I wish every single young man and woman had to see images of bodies riddled with gunfire and how drugs affect them. Some might say it's dehumanizing, but if people actually saw what this shite did to people, maybe they'd wake up and see that things need to change and they won't change on their own.

I have said it on here before and will say it again.
Just accept the fact that the PROFESSION of Journalism is dead. The internet and click based revenue killed it. It was officially dead when the memo from one of the major news orgs leaked some time back where the GM/Editor wrote to his reporters that a "80% accurate story NOW is better than a completely accurate story later." This wasn't TMZ, it was either the Wall Street Journal or New York Times. I can't remember which.
I used to work with and respect journalists. Hell, most of the kids now can't even formulate a sentence correctly.
