Look buddy, it sucks that your frat bro died, but WAFB is just reporting the news. You know how you don't end up on WAFB? don't create a news story. The media isn't the problem, stupid behavior is the problem.

Or it's both.They aren't mutually exclusive.
Dangerous drug usage and lazy, half-assed media sensationalism.
Most people are smart enough to recognize both.

My only point is don't create a story, then you don't have to even worry about what the media is reporting or sensationalizing. Everybody loves to read/see the story until they or someone they know is in it.
The media didn't create the story, the frat bro ODing created the story. WAFB didn't take the pictures of all the drugs in the frat bros room, WAFB didn't preform the autopsy, WAFB didn't write the letters to LSU, the pictures and information provided in the WAFB report all came from the police investigation. Maybe you and the OP are really mad at whoever provided the information to WAFB, "media" is just a mouth piece spouting out information. Unless they made up facts or exaggerated the real story they did nothing wrong. Watching the entire report it didn't appear to me that they were sensationalizing anything, they reported the facts. They reported the frat bro dying, they reported the investigation the police made, they reported the autopsy results, they reported the fact that frat bros were doing drugs in the house IN FRONT OF SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS, how stupid could you be? but that's an entirely different issue.
Allow me to propose this question to you, should the Advocate post DWI arrests everyday? I haven't seen anyone question that recently, they list your name, address, and all of the charges against you for all of the world to see, including your family. Is that sensationalism?

Reporting that after someone died of a drug overdose, other drugs and drug paraphernalia was found in his residence is news? That's SHOCKING news!

Are you in Alexandria? Would this be a world class contrarian attorney with great taste in music and a penchant for high-end beers? Or someone else?

This is an informative piece. It tells me this was much more than an isolated incident. This guy had large amounts of drugs out in the open, including scales and multiple syringes, and had needle marks in his arms and feet. He was more than a casual user who made an unfortunate choice. The kid was a hardcore user who was probably dealing. And his "brothers" either approved, or willfully looked the other way, because he sure wasn't hiding what he was doing.
Add to that the fact that Many (most?) of the Sigma Chis learned absolutely nothing from his death and continued to use. Based on the vote not to submit to the hair test, nearly all the actives were involved in drug use or sympathetic to it-It was admittedly an onerous requirement, but not out of line based on the events. Nationals were at least giving them a chance. They could easily just have shut it all down then and there instead.
If I'm a pledge, and got into this under false pretenses, I'm pissed that my reputation is stained by association with practices I had nothing to do with.
If I'm the parent of a pledge, I'm relieved this happened before my kid got too deep into a bad situation.
If I'm an alum, I'm pissed beyond belief, and I'm keeping a list of these current actives so any resume of theirs that comes across my desk gets trashed immediately.
Sorry, no sympathy for this Reed kid or any of his "brothers." Actions have consequences, and you get to a point in life when you have to stand on your own feet and face those consequences without daddy's money or connections.

Stopped reading your 1st paragraph at frat bros because 1) it illustrates your dumb/ a troll and 2) not a member of a fraternity. But I would like to answer your genius question right there with one of my own:, do you really not see a difference in someone overdosing on heroin in their home and someone endangering lives by driving drunk?

I Love that guy.A fellow audiophile. Never let the two of us discuss politics in the same room though.

That's where you're off base.
And if this candid approach helps other students see the dangers of doing drugs...then is that worth it?

In 1985/86 I was a Lambda Chi at LSU. We had a "pledge" named Chuck, a troubled kid. Before he was initiated, he took a shotgun, and blew his head off in a Tiger Plaza Apartment. We were all shocked.
A few weeks later, the Baton Rouge Advocate ran a front page Sunday edition, above-the-fold human interest piece (two more FULL pages on pages 8 and 9 etc) that basically blamed the fraternity for his death. How he was just a poor working class kid from Morgan City suddenly placed in harm's way by the rich (lol) Frat stars who mocked him and drove him to suicide. I had like $14 to my name and the same for most of the guys who were all typical S Louisiana kids.
In 1987 someone burned the house down while we were in it. The media and all the campus SJW-types (Jerry Schumacher and those " lives of quiet desperation"failed at life guys) made a big deal that we had a random black lawn jockey on the house. And thus essentially deserved our rich white guy fates.
Yesterday America watched the media roll out a prepackaged Narrative that fit their agenda. It was about the 10,000th display of the same thing. The lesson is that the last people to really examine the TRUTH of any particular thing are journalists. And they approach stories as moral crusaders and project their mediocrity upon the stories they present. Never getting within a mile of THE TRUTH, and not giving a shite.
Chuck Kelly - lived across the hall from me - I saw him laying there - that image never went away. I loaned him a shotgun several times to go hunting - He was good friends with my room mate..... saw him out the night right before... next day when I'm coming home - cops and firetrucks every where - someone blurted out chuck shot himself - i grabbed first cop i saw and asked if used an remington 1100 - cop grabbed me and brought me in apt to see supervisor - unfortunately i saw more than I ever wanted to see... also briefly saw notes he had written - no mention of fraternity...... I sure as frick wish that cop hadn't drug me in that apt. though.....january 86......... felt real guilty for a loooooonggggg time about loaning him the gun.... till I learned how in insidious and vile depression can be..... can still picture that wall... 30 years later.... from my knowledge his suicide had absolutely nothing to do with the fraternity

2) not a member of a fraternity

Sure there is difference, however both cases could be completely avoided and once you get the police involved it becomes public.
The truth is the story and all the gory details needs to be news. People need to know that things aren't all pretty formals and fundraisers. Hiding the details won't help anybody, because truth be told you frat bros don't really care about anybody but yourselves, as individuals. If you did care, you wouldn't have sat idly by while one of your "brothers" was shooting up heroin like a junky out on the street. You can't say, no one knew about it either, because as the WAFB story pointed out frat members were doing drugs in front of surveillance cameras, out in the open. Also, 66 members refused to submit to fraternity mandated drug tests, that's problematic, and indicative of an overlying problem with the house.
Jesus! I sound like someone's parent, who the hell have I become? I guess that's what happens when you get older. Anyways, Mr President, good luck with that whole frat thing, I'm sure you will stay real close with all your bros after college.

I hear ya man.
shite like that is why I quit working for tv news even though I was advancing fairly rapidly.
Its a really dirty feeling to have to shove a camera into a person's face after they just dealt with a serous personal tragedy.
