In Louisiana law, abuse talked about in confession is exempt from the mandatory reporter protocol but in general priests are not allowed to report anything to police from a confessional

Well that shite needs to change.

And as far as “no one is going to confess now” how is that much different than it is currently when, if they do confess - the priest cannot speak of it?

I don’t think child predators need a safe space to confess. Fk them. They can go confess at 901 Poplar or whatever the address is for your local police department.

Not a religious person but wouldn’t we also want to extend this to doctors and lawyers and other privileged professions?

ETA: what’s the justification for stopping it just at religious confession?
Aren't dr's 'mandatory reporters' like teachers?

eta- answered a few posts later

Priests who break the seal of confession are excommunicated.

ETA: the penance a priest would give to someone who confessed this is almost certainly that they should turn themselves in and face the consequences. The priest will not break the seal of confession to report ANY crime. This is just another way for government to creep its way into religion.

People will simply not confess it.

All folks employed by churches should be mandatory reporters.

Thanks for the explanation Ingeniero.

What is the pulse on this bill/law amongst Priests?

Are they for the most part, in favor of it? I would think they might be… with being given an “out” so to speak and not being burdened with the weight of KNOWING something heinous was going on in his parish and not being able to report it….

Yes it is. It won't stand up to judicial review, nor will priests comply.

More organized assaults against Christ’s Church. Notice that no one gets Billy Bob from the Bible tabernacle when they need an exorcism…

Nope. Shrinks have to report crimes to Police, so I don't see why priests should be exempt.

frick anyone that lives like a piece of garbage, goes to confession and then believes they aren't a piece of garbage.

Only an idiot or a liberal would have a problem with a priest reporting a child predator.

Edit...yes I have pent up frustration. I have two catholic relatives that have literally treated dying family like garbage. They use confession to cleanse themselves of guilt.

There are two exorcists in the Diocese of Springfield - Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and one of them is my parish priest. He told me that 98% of the calls he receives are from Protestants.

Seems like it'd be a sin to not report it.

Why don’t they mandate that lawyers must report?

I’m a mandatory reporter. I don’t think it is an inappropriate thing.

Why are lawyers given a pass?

to be fair- it isn't just the Catholics who have been protecting child predators for decades. Southern Baptists are right up there with them.

Obviously I’m not Catholic, but Priest’s aren’t mandated to report things like this already? So someone could come in to confession, confess of molesting children, raping women/children, murder etc… and the Priest just tells them to say a few Hail Mary’s and go ‘bout their business?? JFC
The specific concern is that some courts have determined that this is free expression of their religion, so there has been a reluctance to violate that principle.
It is a peculiar exception and I am not a fan. I just understand how it fits into our system.

I agree with your thinking on this.
