Vintage 15 minute video showing construction of the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

Youtube Video
Amazing. Construction started in 1971 and finished in 1973. That bridge has issues of no shoulders and needs to be 3 lanes today, but was an engineering feat at the time. Stupid small jobs can't even get finished this quickly. It took four days for a barge carrying a half dozen slabs for the roadway to get from Pontchartrain to the bridge construction area. Of course, this is when people actually worked for living.
If an I-10 bypass in BR would be built today, it would take 5-6 years minimum, maybe more to get finished due to laziness, embezzlement, etc.

I prefer the name Swamp Expressway.

It does sound cool. My first exposure to a real swamp was driving over this bridge.

A new bridge would take 10 years of environmental impact studies.

damn, takes a whole hour to reach the river level in the locks? Never thought it took that long

The day you walked into homeroom and they had a film projector set up was always a good day. Even if it wasn't interesting, you could take a nap.

Wow, didn’t realize the bridge was fabricated at the same place the Causeway was.. Crazy..

We could have a loop in no time if they manufactured it that way.

In other words, this bridge would never be built today, even if traffic outflow demanded it.
I'm assuming like the I-49 extension in Lafayette. The two excuses are impact to the water and as usual, racism for building a viaduct over Northside Lafayette.

No problem. Didn't think many would be interested, but figured someone here might be.

Both of my parents are from Baton Rouge and my extended family is there. We moved to Lafayette when I was five years old and I went to school for 8 years in Baton Rouge. I’ve traveled that bridge hundreds of times and have always been amazed at it. Good find and good video.

Thanks for posting. I work in the heavy construction industry, it’s a damn good thing that they built that when did. It would be a legal disaster today.

This and the Lake Ponchatrain Bridge amaze me too. Only annoying this was having to take US 190 when there's an accident on the bridge, but still appreciate that such a bridge will never be built again in the U.S.

There was several years of environmental and engineering that went into this before it was built as was there on the causeway. But this country wasn’t held hostage so to speak. They did the work then built the project.

Really sad that America's best days are behind her. The 'can do' attitude is now 'can't do'
as other have noted, there is no possible way this could be done today with environmental road blocks. 10 years of study, then 10 years of legal battles

"Louisiana Airborne Memorial Bridge"
I've hunted and fished the area below it for a while now...
Was one of those that drove over it the first few days it was open just to see it in 73'...
