Id rather they clean all the trash that lies beneath the bridge. fricking ridiculous amount of garbage under those spans. Talk about an eyesore. And embarrassing.

I think it was a year ago, I went to visit my folks in Lafayette, and the day before we left it rained and stormed pretty fierce, and there was sooooooo much trash in the basin. It was unreal.

Great video - thanks for sharing! At some point, most of us have wondered about how they built that bridge there.

I have always marveled at smooth it is (being so old) and, also, how well the concrete holds up. It doesn't seem to ever need patchwork, except for railings after accidents.

The southern portion of LA 1 from Port Fourchon headed up towards Leeville was built using similar methods.

I was just coming here to point that out. How many miles long was the Leeville to Fourchon project, and how long did it take compared to the Atchafalaya one?

Overall, about 9.2 miles long and took about 5 years. About half of it was constructed using "end on" construction, similar to the way I-310 was built. The remainder used traditional methods however there were very strict controls on the damage caused to the environment by the construction process, which made it more difficult.

They broke ground on the Leeville Bridge portion in 2007 and it was done by 2009. Then it took another 2 years for the section between Leeville and Fourchon.

That is where DOTD started screwing up the La 1 project. Back 2005 they put out the project to bid which was the first phase Leeville to Fourchon, but it came back too high, so they rebid it in packages and removed the interstate type on and off ramps which left those awful 90 degree curves.

They ultimately paid more than what the first overbid was due to rising post hurricane costs. They are now just improving the last curve, and building a northern section to have a launching pad for the second phase to Golden Meadow.

Construction started in 1971 and finished in 1973.

Driving from Lafayette to BR or NO sucked a lot less from '73 on. We did miss passing the old snake farm on the way to New Orleans.

That was pretty damn interesting. Lots of work to build over swampland and the fact they manufactured machinery to accomplish it is a testament to man's ability to think outside the box.

Speed limit is too low. And semi trucks should be banned from using it.

LADOTD ended up paying almost double by breaking the project into phases instead of awarding it as one project......genuis

and now they have a 15 million dollar on going contract to fix one of the 90 degree turns....even more genuis.
