I was recently criticized by a nosey internet parent when I posted a pic of a 3 year old nephew working on the family farm, harvesting pecans. (She wanted to call the cops on me for child abuse.
We have 4 generations of family working together, harvesting pecans each year. It is a family enterprise and everyone has fun.
The children are welcome to run and play all day as we work or they can work and earn money. Their jobs are things like clearing sticks from under the pecan trees, fetching drinks, picking pecans that the machine did not pick up, etc.
None of it is hard work and they play as much as they work. They are proud of the "work" they do and the money they earn. They are also developing a strong work ethic and learning the value of money that is earned.
Seriously, is there anything wrong with kids working in this scenario? They are completely safe, nowhere near dangerous machinery and look forward to it every year.
What things do you do (or did your parents do ) to help develop a healthy work ethic in the children in the family?

I think there are ethical concerns for sure. The children in my sweatshop are only allowed to work 12 hour days.

For someone that is "such a private individual" as you put it...you sure do post a lot of personal details.

I don't really make mine work. I have them focusing on school and instruments. Disciplined, but not always doing tasks. They are cheerful and helpful in their approach to work when we have family work days and they also have menial weekly tasks that they can do in a half hour a week.
I just prefer a life where kids are held accountable but aren't really tasked with too much. They have the rest of their lives for that. I have no issue with people who have different approaches, but that's the one that works for my family.

At age 3, I had an atc 70 with a small trailer. My job was to pick up limbs and sticks in the yard. Any I couldn't lift, I was to drag to the burn pile.
Picking pecans? Tell that parent to frick off.

Doesn't sound like work to me, more like fun and being around relatives.
I actually started working at around 10 for money, all people did was hire me and praise me to my Mom.

Maybe the photo you posted made it look worse than it really was. People exaggerate things in their mind.

No idea. There are different properties. My inlaws and their kids each have their own pecan acreage. We took about 25,000 lbs to market last year which is a decent amount but hardly makes us big ballers in the pecan world.

People on the internet suck. My sister had a genetic issue where she literally stopped being able to provide breast milk for my niece. "Mothers" on the internet were cursing her out and saying she should be thrown in jail for giving a 6 month child formula, even though she couldn't produce milk anymore.
