Vietnam. Was Hugh Thompson Jr a hero or traitor?

I was watching the Vietnam War PBS documentary and it got to the massacre of My Lai. I was not real familiar with this event and have since done research. Hugh Thompson Jr landed his helicopter in between the Vietnamese villagers and the USA platoon that was killing them. He and his crew threatened to shoot any American soldiers that tried to kill these villagers.
He was called a traitor by many but also given awards later in life. Was Hugh a hero or traitor? No soldiers were ever convicted of committing the massacre.

I wasn’t there so I’m not going to judge what those SM decided to do. I’d rather come home alive then die in some third world shite hole. That much I do know.

Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown.

Pretty sure Calley was at least court-martialed and then had his sentence commuted.

Was he just flying around and saw the shooting? How did he know what was going on?

I really feel sorry for people who knew little or nothing about Vietnam war history and watched that horrible slanted Ken Burns garbage.

A bunch of soldiers were originally charged, only a few made it to trial. LT William Calley was the only soldier convicted. He was sentenced to life for murder and was kept under house arrest at Ft Benning while his appeal was being prosessed. Nixon eventually commuted his sentence.

I haven't seen Ken Burns' Vietnam yet, but I don't need to to know troops in Pinkville got out of control and slaughtered women and children.

Hero of the highest order.

If it were 2017 and Hugh Thompson landed his helicopter between ISIS militants and a bunch of civilian journalists and relief workers they were about to execute, would he be a hero or a traitor?
Soldiers were methodically rounding up and shooting non-combatants. Hugh Thompson had the balls to try to stop it. That makes him a hero. One of very few that day.

I don't remember Thompson's exact duties, but there were plenty of helicopters overhead that day - observation, command & control, gunships, whatever...
The condensed version is that while monitoring the ground troops radio frequencies, Thompson was hearing that there were no friendly casualties and minimal or no enemy resistance. But when he looked down, he could see a lot of shooting and hootches burning. He radiod several times "There's a lot of shooting down there. What's going on with all the shooting?" He finally got real low and saw dead women, children and old men in a ditch.
He confronted some infantrymen about what was happening and they basically told him to frick off. I think he took one or two wounded Vietnamese back to his base. I know he went into his TOC after re-fueling and kind of got blown off by his superiors. They either knew or didn't care that civilians were being killed.
The Army didn't want the embarrassment and covered it up. It didn't come to light until an infantryman went public after his tour of duty was completed. It was like a year or two after the incident.

If it would could guarantee your survival, would you be willing to kill an indigenous one year old child once a month? Weekly? Daily?
