This happened on a United Denver to Houston flight I was on a couple years ago. The people they randomly chose caused a scene, not as bad as that but there was a lot of yelling and cursing. United sucks dick
I saw a woman one time profressional tel them no- I have a valide ticket and expect it to be honored

if it was personal travel or work travel cutting into my weekend home - I would have sold out at $400 honestly

Is a 4.5 hour drive. FYI
Yep. It's an easy drive.
Take the $800 voucher, have United rent a car for you, and drive the five hours. You'd be getting to your destination about three hours later than had you been able to take the flight.

This has me thinking..is there a way to scam the airlines. Find out what flights are overbooked..maybe a short flight time, a destination you don't really need to go, always be the volunteer and just rake up $100's in vouchers?

This is exactly what I was going to post.

That's actually kind of genius. Work the business itineraries at peak times and play the odds. Hold out for the double and triple pays if you are feeling confident.

In most circumstances I would not take the voucher if I need to be somewhere. Also not worth driving all night to get home.

Yup, there's a strategy to it all. Easy options for nola area is flying into MSY for mardi gras or a thursday/friday before jazzfest, departing nola sunday nights after a noon saints game. The best is actually after there has been horrible thunderstorms and everythings been cancelled for a few days, think of what happened at ATL this past week on delta.

I'm paying money for a seat on the plane, I should get the damn seat. Another reason why JetBlue is the shite.
LOL if you think Jet Blue doesn't oversell.
IDB situations like this are extremely rare. Surprised they stopped at $800 for volunteers. Usually they don't want to IDB because they have to file with DOT and the passenger gets a good bit more in cash. Which is why they'll always start with the lowest fares, 3rd party bookings.

Why in the hell would they let too many people board the plane, knowing that there were employees that also had to board the plane? If they did not realize it until the last minute, that's on them. They should have found another flight for the employees, even if on a competing airline

I get the overbooking, yes it sucks, but I understand why the airlines do it
the fault here lies in the fact that once you let a passenger on a plane, you cant take that back. People get bumped from flights all the time, but you address that at the gate, before they board. Once again, United sucks, no real surprise there

Airlines have gotten VERY good at predicting oversells and loads to avoid them. Hell, I was averaging about $2500 a year in vouchers about 4-6 years ago and I may get one $400 one a year now.
