Valero agreed to pay $320.5 million for LyondellBasell's former Houston refinery on the Houston Ship Channel, a roughly 700-acre site next to Valero's existing Houston refinery. Valero said it expects to restart 165,000 barrels per day of light sweet crude processing capacity at the site by the end of 2027.
Apparently this facility is located in Houston, Texas.

This is wholly inaccurate.
And who TF is us? That reads like you're some press release flunkies.

Unfortunately, the entire refinery has been dismantled. Its now a giant open field.

Hell yeah! Something other than Data Centers. We need more refineries
Posted on 11/3/26 at 8:09 am to AlwysATgr
They’ll get some urban cowboys in there and get it fired up quickly. Maybe they can get Gilley’s fired back up too.

Unless they tore it down between 530 this morning and now the Shell convent refinery is still standing and looking for a buyer.

Good for turnaround and construction Baws because that dump is going to need a shite pile of work.
Lyondell duct taped that thing along the last few years

It might still be standing but several units are in the demo process.

If so, yes, some majors are looking at how much it would take to restart.
We built a Hydrogen pipeline for Air Products that tied into Shell Convent about 2 years ago.. There was some talks back then about trying to get it back into operation.

They will need to install a new unit to do tight shale crude, a condensate splitter. Word is at the coker unit was demolished. This means no Venezuelan,.though Valero is going to build a new one.
We are a year from it restarting
Can they process sour crude just not Venezuelan?
Posted on 11/3/26 at 8:38 am to Trout Bandit
Yes sir this is correct. There were a couple of majors that went in and looked at buying it, but no dice. This would be a huge help to the area if it would come back online. I have no idea what soured the deal. Hopefully someone restarts it

Depends on what units they have available to increase the Valero complexity as well.
No cokers there. They do have a hydrocracker. Valero installed condensate splitters to take Eagle Ford when no one was buying it other than to thin out heavy. They also installed hydrocrackers to increase diesel production for exports to Europe. That was around 15 or so years ago at Corpus and Mereaux. They may have installed this at the Houston refinery back then or since then. I don't know.
Bay will likely get the work.

They can run sour but not heavy crude if I'm not mistaken but I'm not certain

I don't know any medium or major refinery which cannot. Most of sweet crude only refineries were demolished in the mid 1980s other than small ones tied to nearby oilfields with local markets.
Retards of the news media (including their experts) only think in sweet and sour. They really are clueless.
BTW, Columbian heavy crude is sweet.

St. Rose turned down my offer to restart last week. Guaranteed 1 million barrels per month of Merey 16 from Venezuela via a would be JV partner. It doesn't have a coker but is an asphalt refinery thanks to Shell's addition of an vacuum unit around 15 years ago.

but is an asphalt refinery
Would not make a lot of sense in the new market.
Maybe if fuel oil becomes a real thing again

Asphalt profits are pretty good these days. Naphtha would be exported to Venezuela or to Columbia. VGO is good right now too.
The JV partner would pay for the 6 months of work to restart. A number of people have looked at restarting it over the last 5 years.
