I feel like people who hate the beach likely traveled and stay with a ton of people to make it cheap. Absolute nightmare, I'd rather not go

Agree with this, which is why I prefer to do "busy" trips. When we did trips to Europe pre kids, I loved digging into train schedules and less known neighborhoods and spent hours researching and strategizing how to make an intense vacation work without it being miserable. Which was honestly almost as fun as the trip itself.

Granted, we didn't have kids, so I'm wondering if I'll start to get more enjoyment out of pool/beach type trips now.

That changes with kids

Even a simple beach vacation I’m ready for bed by 9 lol

This...best case scenario you end up splitting off anyway at which point everyone starts to have a great time...but then there is always that underlying obligation of... are we meeting somewhere for dinner...yall wanna come meet us here??

My mom and dad recently vacationed with some other couples and their account was a never ending hell ride of terrible events.....at the end I said that's why I always turn yall down for big family vacations....I heard her brain click in that moment

One planned outing/destination per day, otherwise we just wing it. Strike a nice balance of sightseeing or activity with lazy time
same

Sometimes the things we discover outside of the planned activity are better than the activity.
Restaurants/bars are in addition to never the planned activity.

Paddle boarding, fishing, leisurely museum walking, sightseeing, wineries, etc are relaxing for us though. We don't usually sleep in alot and never take naps. But sometimes we will spend all afternoon on a balcony with wine and cheese.

I feel the same way. I planned our guys golf trip and really enjoyed planning the rounds and building the spreadsheet to track our rounds with handicaps for our Ryder Cup.

I will say, with 3 kids now, I actually look forward to sitting in an airport without any humans to manage.

depends. If I’m staying in the USA, beach. If I’m traveling internationally, on the go.

We take both. One to sit on my arse so that the crack can heal. The other running around at DW. The latter will soon change to Branson or something else.

Eh, I don't know. I don't really like going on gulf coast vacations, and I've never been piled into a place with a bunch of people.

I am not big on it because, while the beaches are beautiful, it lacks all of the amenities you'd find in most other tropical areas. It is crazy to me that there aren't more Mexico-esq resorts in Alabama/Florida that cater to couples.

I once went on a four day beach trip with the wife and 7 and 2 year old. We jammed our days with all sorts of activities.

Never Again

We didn't fcking stop the entire time and spent very little time on the beach itself (I'd say 80% of it was in the evening in the last 90 mins before sunset). It wasn't a vacation at all.

Now, I plan a beach trip and I keep my arse there 90% of the time.....and stay longer. Fck going on vacation and rushing from place to place the entire time to squeeze in all the "fun".

I agree with that exactly LL. Iy is why we avoid the gulf. If there were all inclusive no kid resorts we may be more inclined.

Truth. I’m never so tired as the day after we return from a trip. It’s why I insist now if the trip is more than 4 days we return on a Saturday. Really need that one day to try and rest and unpack before diving back into work.

Oh yeah. We usually come home Saturday or Sunday and I also take Monday off. I need to feel like I had a weekend at home still.

Anybody remember the vacation episode of Full House when they went to Hawaii?

I do trips like Danny Tanner with a long, specific itinerary printed out for everything to follow.

We make the most out of our vacations so we always have an itinerary which makes it much more rewarding. I’ve been on multiple 3 week trips out of the country with an itinerary where we’ve seen and done a ton and you get so much culture that way. I’ll go with a recent, simple example though.

We went to the west coast for a week and flew into SF. Did fisherman’s wharf, Chinatown, and some sight seeing day 1. Drove up the coast to Seattle where we flew home from and got a city pass on day 7 and did all there is to see in Seattle. Days 2-6 between was sleeping at a place on the NoCal, Oregon and Washington coast every night which was a beautiful drive. Saw whales from our room in two of the places we stayed. Itinerary included one day each in: Olympic national park, redwood forest national park, mt rainier national park, crater lake national park.

The outlier is beach vacations. When we go to the beach we are on the beach every single day and just relax.

The first trip Jones and I took, he saw my itinerary and was like ummmmmm what? But then he saw how relaxing it is to just wake up and show up to things that are already booked, and he's sold on it now. It is far more relaxing to have a plan for the things you want to do than it is to show up and try to frantically figure out what to do.

Besides meals that are reserved, most of the trip is scheduled down time. We typically visit a zoo or museum, or maybe a ballgame if it's baseball season, and that's about the extent of planned attractions. We don't do guided city tours or anything like that.

We don't sleep in either, because kids don't let us . But kids need naps so I usually will sneak in a nap too, or at least go shut my eyes for 20 minutes and just rest.

Nah. I'm not a huge fan of the beach, especially in the dead of summer. I mean, I don't hate it, it beats working and shite, but I'm a mountains and hiking kinda guy. Solitude, beautiful scenery.

Beach is scorching hot, just sitting and drinking, getting sunburnt, sand everywhere. A mess
