I always found picket line violence to prove beyond doubt that unions are full of the most ignorant and trashy people with jobs.

Get your head out of your arse dude! The union isn't trying to get a raise...the members get paid pretty well. It's about safety issues that the company wants to turn a blind eye to and keeping seniority should the site be sold.
My advice to you, get your facts straight before you make assinine comments. And don't let 'em see you trying to cross the line

Then why'd they ask for a 6% raise and complain about the cost of benefits going up?

I don't get how asking for more money makes the job safer. Please clarify

So you'd be OK if they agreed to all the safety items and none of the pay issues???

Be honest. It's all about the money.

I sat next to some plant worker at L'Auberge in LC a couple weeks ago spouting off the same safety rabble. I asked him about the pay raise piece and he quickly changed the topic.

Can they file for unemployment also?

I assume yes, but IDK.

If they are voluntarily leaving, I assume no

And technically they haven't lost their jobs

That's not how it works...when the union decides what plant is going to strike, the union gives 24 hr. notice to the company. The plant then kicks the workers out (at the end of the 24 hr. notice period) and staffs the "on strike" positions with salary people. When the contract is agreed upon, only then can the workers return.

The workers have no say so in the matter as to whether they stay working or leave. It's mandatory that they leave the plant until the contract is resolved.

But they have not officially separated employment.

I guess not. Not sure how that works. No pay, and no insurance (that is lost also) when you don't want to strike is beyond frustrating for those that think a strike is absurd and unneeded.

I didn't read the whole thread but can an individual choose to leave the union and go work directly for the company if something like this happens?

Union asks for 6% company offers 0% they meet in the middle.

Will likely be the usual 2-3-3 raise schedule. It is a negotiation.

Would you let people back in a plant after they just walked out? Sounds like inviting sabatoge, no?

Why are they negotiating money if it's about safety?
