USS Antietam runs aground

The USS Antietam, a US Navy Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser, damaged its propellers and spilled hydraulic oil into the water after running aground off the coast of Japan.
The incident, which occurred Tuesday while the ship was anchoring in Tokyo Bay near Yokosuka, Japan, did not result in any injuries to US or Japanese personnel, but the discharge of up to 1,100 gallons of hydraulic oil prompted environmental concerns.
Ticonderoga-class cruisers are multi-role warships capable of conducting operations ranging from anti-submarine warfare to anti-ballistic missile defense.
The US Navy currently has 22 active Ticonderoga-class cruisers and many of the ships expected to undergo modernization to ensure they reach their projected 35-year lifespan.
Each cruiser costs roughly $1 billion, according to the Navy.
That CO can kiss his career good bye, "He Gone"
CSB: I rode on this ship in the Middle East (Abu Dhabi) to meet my sub while it was patrolling the Indian Ocean.

Sailors were distracted at the time.

One of my old chiefs is CMC of Naval Forces Japan. I'll see if I can get any dirt on this one. But yeah... that CO is done. When we got in a collision my CO was packed up and gone within about 4 hours of us getting to the pier.

Yeah, I think it is funny that the only country that slaughters whales is gonna have "environmental concerns" regarding a rather small lube oil discharge.

They're still dealing with that Fukushima reactor issue... better not tell us shite about a few gallons of oil.

Gone like reassigned gone? Or discharged gone?
By the time you're commanding a $1B ship, I would guess you have invested a lot into that career path (and the US Navy invested a lot in you). I do understand consequences for mistakes, but hate to see a learning experience go completely to waste. Where do you go jobwise? Commercial shipping?

Dumb question. When visiting foreign ports, do Navy ships not bring aboard a local pilot to guide them in like you see here in the states with the big freighters taking on local pilots to bring them up the Mississippi to NOLA, into Charleston, etc.? I would think that no matter how detailed your charts and equipment are, you would want someone with knowledge of the quirks of the harbor area helping you in.

Most of the time they're reassigned gone... but they rarely (if ever) will get another sea command. If anything happens to the vessel while you're in command then you get hit with "loss of confidence in ability to lead". My CO during the collision was an awesome captain. He got shite done, was an exceptional leader, and the crew liked him. He was asleep in his stateroom when the collision occurred... but it cost him his career. I think he ended up at some desk job for a little while and then retired. Last I heard he was working in upper management for some large tech company.

He will be immediately relieved of command and placed before an administrative review board.
His career will either be completely over (released from USN) or he will be assigned to some desk at a shore command.
He will never be a commanding officer and will never be promoted for the rest of his career.

Which collision were you involved in? What happened?
