No, it was not "spun up" so it did not run when it was shot out of the tube. Dummy Torps have no explosives loaded and are designed to float to the surface after being run. When this one was "fired" it simply floated to the surface.

I thought it would be an inert-run situation.

Kudos to all of you who crew submarines. The claustrophobia would put me into a permanent panic attack.

That being said, I want to say in 2006 2 guys died leaving the UK on a Los Angeles class when they were swept overboard in massive seas.

I want to say it was the Minneapolis-St Paul? I probably have the sub, year, and number of people incorrect though.

It was MSP and 4 guys went in... 2 died.

Yeah, if you fell off while the ship was underweigh you were almost guaranteed to be sucked into the prop.

The 2 guys that died on MSP were attached with harnesses. That's probably what contributed to their deaths.

no warhead. It was your typical MK-48 ADCAP but with bouyant material installed where the 650lbs warhead normally resides.

Would it do any damage to a cruise ship if you hit it with a dummy?

I'm gonna have to google that incident. That sounds horrifying

I don't know if a dummy torpedo would even make physical contact with the ship it's targeting. I think modern torpedoes are designed to dive once they get close to the target to swim under the keel of the ship before 'sploding. Idea is to create a void under the ship so the water isn't supporting it any more and the ship's back breaks because of its own unsupported weight.

EDIT: Youtube video demonstrating this very nicely.

not really, the adcap is designed to explode under a ship breaking the keel (a ship snaps in half when the keel is broken). I don't know if it would have directly impacted the hull of the cruise ship.

There are also control wires meaning that the moment we heard the torp running at the ship, we would have stopped it via the control wires

I heard that they were tethered topside. When they got swept over the side they were being knocked against the side of the boat but couldn't really do anything because they were still tied off. Basically just held in place there while they died.

I think this was around 2005-2006 when I heard all that info. I haven't done any research since then so I'm not sure if more facts came out or not. Just what I heard...

Sorry to interrupt a very entertaining boat discussion, but of all the movies out there ("modern" [Crimson Tide] and "classic [Run Silent, Run Deep]), which one most accurately portrays life/activities/duty on a sub?

Das Boot - Classic

Red October - Modern, it's the most accurate but that isn't saying much considering most modern sub movies are hollywoodized

Down Periscope

I will say the missile spin up order and the dive order in Crimson Tide are spot on and I always go full mast when they play "Eternal Father Strong to Save" - The Navy Hymn, when they dive

I think it's just the opposite. One of the submariners could answer this question.

Is that an actual video of a sinking?

The next one did. It breaks the keel, then it breaks in half when it falls back down because the keel isn't there to carry the weight.

Exercise/traget practice

The US Navy has not sunk a ship in combat w a torpedo since WWII

I still think it's mindboggling that a single warhead is powerful enough to partially lift a warship out of the water.

Looks like a bit of both. The force of the explosion lifts the ship and cracks the keel. When gravity pulls the ship down the keel breaks further.

Nice pics, BTW.
