The way capitalism works is this: You produce a product and you sell at a price the market assigns to said product.
You may think your product is worth more. It may very well be. But your thoughts are your perception. The market and what it decides to pay for your product is reality.
Is the USWNT in Soccer worth more than they're currently being paid? Not sure, I'd have to see what the financials for the teams look like.
While we're at it, is the USMNT in Soccer worth more than they're currently being paid? Don't know the answer to that, either.
But ultimately, the worker himself or herself cannot dictate to the market what their product is worth the same way that you cannot dictate your perception to the market and make it reality. The market is in charge of that in a capitalist society.
If you don't like what your product is worth, feel free to find a more lucrative method or means to be compensated for your product to help align your perception of your value to the market's reality of the same.
If the meaning you derive from being justly compensated based on your perception usurps that of your loyalty or interest in working for your current employer, then no one-and I do mean no one-is forcing you to be employed by the USWNT in order to earn your living.
This is really, really simple IMO. There's no real way around it.

What's the attendance average of men compared to women?
Do they think the wnba should be paid the same?
Idiots

As I said earlier, they should be paid based on the value they bring to the bottom line.
Also, this seems unnecessary since they're covered under a collective bargaining agreement. They negotiated this money.

Shocking amount of dumb in this thread.
The women's team is a cash MACHINE. Merchandising, ticket sales, everything.
The women's players get paid shite from their club teams (rightfully so - attendance, merchandising, etc is paltry).
With the number of appearances they make for US Soccer annually, they deserve a bigger cut.
The international game is much bigger than the club game for the women. It's the inverse for the men. Argentina doesn't pay Messi $500,000 per match - but Barcelona probably does.

Anecdotally, I would think that women's soccer is way more popular than women's basketball.

Bringing this over from the thread on the soccer board thread, credit to McCaigBro69
And as for attendance numbers (also from soccer board)
quote:
If we want to get real technical, comparing the ad revenue (you know, who ultimately pays for everything regardless of federation) of the 2014 men's world cup to the 2015 women's world cup, the men's event brought in $521 million dollars compared to only $17 million for the women.
Looking at revenues for WC's, in 2010 the South Africa event generated $3.7 billion dollars, compared to only $72.818 million for the Women's world cup in Germany (I used Germany and South Africa because I couldn't find the numbers for the most recent women's world cup).
And surprsingly, the women's pay-out to teams was $10 million, while the men only received $348 million. That means the women participants received 13 percent of total revenue generated by the event, while the men only received around nine percent.
And as for attendance numbers (also from soccer board)
quote:
On the US Soccer site, in 2015 the women played 13 games, bringing in a total attendance of 361,388. The men played 11 games and brought in 396,326.

The thing is.. the US Women's team actually is worth a shite and actually wins games while the men's squad is always fighting for life against teams like Guatemala, Mexico, Jamaica, etc.
A few years ago, the US Men U-17 team scrimmaged the US Women's National Team. The Men's U-17 team beat the Women's World Cup champions 8-2. EIGHT to TWO.
That's right, 16 year old boys beat the shite out of the best women's team in the world. This obviously was kept strongly under wraps by US Soccer because it didn't want to hurt the perception of its most successful team.

The USMNT may be dogshit right now, but the product that men put on the pitch is so much more valuable than women it's insane. This lawsuit is pure bullshite.

Except the Women's team has a few World Cup's.

Except that the women are actually good at the game. Meanwhile men's soccer has the watch-ability of the WNBA.

Too bad no once cares to watch on TV outside of every 4 years. That's where the real money comes from, and is why they will not ever make what the men make. They don't have an equal product. This suit is stupid.

Might be the dumbest post in this thread. Congrats.
There's no comparison to watching the men play compared to the women. It's basically two different sports.

Additionally, the women get paid nothing for playing more than 20 games, while the men get between $5,000 and $17,625 for each game played beyond 20.
This is the only problem I have. Their pay should directly reflect how much money the matches bring in.
Posted on 3/31/16 at 10:28 am to Mr.Perfect
I mean, if they want to make the same money as the men, can they not try out for the men's team?? I'm sure there's a rule not allowing men to play on a woman's team, but I doubt there are specific rules the other way. Seems like equal opportunity to me.
Why would I ever pay someone more when they put out a product that is less profitable. That would be like all the Astros players suing their owner because they don't get paid the same as the Yankees.

That means nothing! You have to compare revenue vs the men to see why the men are paid more.

I'd really like to know the answer to this.
It isn't as easy to figure as people are acting in this thread, regardless of their stance.
I've already looked at the 2013 and 2014 financial statements of the USSF and they don't break down the men and women's teams very often. One thing that I found surprising is that they have approximately $70MM in various traditional investments in their assets. I guess I didn't expect them to have so much put away.
Also, someone posted the World Cup revenue for both teams, but that is just as misleading as the figures cited in the lawsuit. It should be discussed based on profitability, not revenue.
However, at the end of the day, they are covered under a CBA, so any deficiencies are their fault. It chaps my arse when someone wants to reneg on their contract when they think they're underpaid, but they'll happily cash the check while they're injured and/or underperforming. I felt the same way about the Earl Thomas situation last year and I have the same position when people think Curry should holdout next year.

Women's sports outside of maybe tennis and gymnastcs don't garner the same amount of interest as men's typically. However, The USA women have won at least two world cup titles and have far more success on the international stage than the men's. This isn't about a for-profit private league. It's about the compensation via the same soccer governing body as the men's national team. They have done as much if not more for the US national teams as the men and I see no reason why they shouldn't be compensated similarly to the men.
