My family and I have very stable jobs. I own a home with good interest rates. It has some affect, but not that much on my family or I’s way of living.

We do as well, but a shrinking population will have an effect at some point. There are reasons people are leaving and if you don't address them it will snowball. Look at some place like Jackson, MS, Bogalusa or Detroit, which was once the wealthiest city in America.

Is it so difficult to understand?

The top 3 states for LA people to relocate to are Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana (based on census info).

Louisiana's proximity to Texas is a huge factor. Most of the younger professionals that I know that leave Louisiana move to Houston, Dallas, or Austin. The former two are close enough to drive to see family. Older people are taking their cash to the Gulf Coast, so Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Louisiana has almost no natural beauty and the areas that are unique are either sweltering swamps or full of bad culture.

Basically, there's no place that Lilly white leftists want to move to...so you get a dying state.

It will eventually.

Most of my siblings and cousins live out of state. If trends continue, yours probably will too unless your really privledged and have good connections.

That whole anedotal "I'm okay so there's no problem" mindset is ine of the reasons Louisiana is in such a decline. No long term thinking from its citizens.

I live in Louisiana so my comment is based on being a resident and not a trolling attempt. All the usual reasons given that include crime, politics, and schools are just contributing factors. I think the main reason people leave Louisiana and why there aren't a lot of people moving in the state is due to two main reasons, one of which can't be fixed.

There are no mid or large size cities that are desirable to live in from an outsider's point of view. Most states have an area that is to some extent considered the "hot" area where younger people want to live. Whether or not you like these cities / areas, in the south Texas has Austin, Arkansas has NW Arkansas, Alabama has Huntsville and to some extent the greater Birmingham area, Tennessee has Nashville, South Carolina has Myrtle Beach, North Carolina has Charlotte, etc. Louisiana has Shreveport, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles and New Orleans. None of those cities are very appealing. Maybe things could change for those cities, but it would take decades and a lot of local pride and determination.

The second reason, which isn't fixable, is that Louisiana is basically not aesthetically pleasing. I'm sure that will draw the down votes, but to anyone that isn't from here, low lying, swampy, standing water land with a lack of drainage just isn't pretty. Throw in the hot, wet, gulf coast climate with huge bug population as the icing on the cake. Every other state in the south has mountain or upper regions or beautiful coastlines. Maybe I'm pushing this description with Mississippi, but there are very pretty areas in Mississippi.

Louisiana has great people, a distinct culture, and lots of job opportunities. The problem is when the residents spend time in neighboring states with nice suburbs and cities in an aesthetically pleasing area, Louisiana loses out.

South LA has a lot of heavy industry jobs, but not a lot of accounting, finance, IT etc type of jobs. Sure there are some, but not really very many large employers.

Most college grads in non-industrial fields move to Houston, Atlanta or Dallas to work for a Fortune 500 and they never move back. Unfortunately those are the most important type of people to retain to improve an area.

We not putting New Orleans in the same sentence with Shreveport and Lake Charles like it’s not desirable to young people

I never hear anyone say they would love to move to New Orleans like it is Nashville or Austin. Detroit may not be in the same category as Mogadishu, but it is still Detroit. No one dreams of moving there either.

Maybe some 24 yr old hipsters or something like that. No married couple with 3 kids and no ties to the area thinks to themselves, let's move our family from Salt Lake City to New Orleans.

Our legislative session starts Monday. Read what got done at the end of this and tell me hurricanes are our problem. At that point I’ll call you retarded, but as of right now you still have a chance at being educated.

Even better, we have the plant baws. Single-handily keeping the 4-wheeler and tobacco industries alive.

And what exactly does long term thinking do? What can I do for the great state that would accomplish anything? Besides the obvious usage of votes to have better government representation. Louisiana has a lot of cesspool areas, but there’s nothing I can personally do to change it and moving far away from family isn’t the answer for me. I enjoy it here.

Why West Virginia?
40% of Appalachia is abandoned, 45% is on drugs, the last 15% retired from the coal mines and watched their kids move, get hooked on drugs, or die. That whole state is in awful, awful condition. It truly is sad to see in person - I've driven through towns that look like everyone left in 1990 and didn't bother bringing anything with them. You'd think you were on the set of a post zombie apocalypse movie.
