Much of what is imported is lean beef trimmings that meatpackers mix with fattier beef produced in the United States to produce the varieties of ground beef that domestic consumers want, so any change in imports would affect primarily hamburger.
I pay a little bit more on the pound to buy Kentucky Cattleman's ground beef. They purchase from farms inside the state and process it here as well. I believe they're also distributing in Illinois and Tennessee at this point too (if other folks are looking for products that are local).

There is no reason to import beef.

I guess you mean oligopoly, since mono literally means 1.
Nobody forced consolidation on the packing industry, just like nobody forced consolidation on food distribution (Sysco).

Supply not meeting demand or is supply sitting on the shelf?
Anecdotal I know, but in my group of regular friends and acquaintances, pork, chicken and wild game have replaced beef aside from ground beef.
Beef is one of the rare groceries that has not come down in price.

Torn here, too... mainly because even ground beef is effing expensive right now, much moreso the solid cuts. Hopefully the needle can be threaded well.

This is a no brainer. We are allowing more beef in from a country known to have great beef

Where is this? It's over $9 a pound at my local publix for the cheap stuff.
I don't really make hamburgers, but I've basically stopped cooking anything now that calls for ground beef and opted for something that I can use pork instead

Foreign-owned meat-packing plants in the United States control the market, so the cow has already left the barn on this - so to speak.

As much as i dislike importing something we make plenty of domestically, it's needed right now. Herd haven't been able to recover from a couple brutal summers and it's going to take a few more years to build them back. And thats assuming we don't have another drought year that will set us back again.

The HEB closest to my house is showing $10.81 for a 2 lb pack of 80/20 ground chuck. $5.69/lb.
If I want a 1 lb pack, it’s $6.49.
That’s the HEB brand for 80/20. If I want the cheap arse Hill Country stuff, I can get a 1 lb tube for $4.79. A 3 lb tube for $13.99.

We were getting some stuff for a cookout and beef hot dog weenies were more than double the pork/chicken product.
Almost $10 for an 8 pack of beef hot dogs here.

Farmers are the worst. Subsidize these wankers at every turn only to watch them cry when the Argentinian beef gives their neighbors a brief respite from the price gouging they face.

Ungrateful shits must have missed the part about POTUS directing more grazing land to be made available as well as help to small processing facilities.

I have two friends who have small herds. They are getting a really good price right now for calves and young cows. That said, the price of hay is high, there hasn't been much rain. Fertiler is expensive and equipment is out of sight.
Perhaps a bigger concern is the size of the national herd. It's diminished and with folks selling off mama cows and calves, rebuilding the size of the herd is not something that will happen overnight. They expect grocery store prices to continue to go up.

Grass fed ground beef at Sam's is 7.16 a pound. $9 for cheap shite is insane.

South Dakota rancher Brett Kenzy said he wants American consumers to determine whether beef is too expensive, not the government. And so far there is little sign that consumers are substituting chicken or other proteins for beef on their shopping lists even though the average price of a pound of ground beef hit its highest point ever at $6.32 in the latest report before the government shutdown began.
I still buy grass fed ground beef weekly from Costco at just under that price.
I miss it but couldn’t tell you the last time I bought steak to cook at home. Just not worth it at the current price points

Ranchers want protectionism.
Screw them.
Ahh yes, put even more ranchers out of business and we can rely on yet another foreign country to supply us with essentials. That always works out.

Protectionism bad. Also, global competition bad.
Can't please 'em all.

Its not going to put rachers out of business.
If you support American ranchers, buy American beef and they'll prosper.
But every one of you, just like myself, will buy cheaper because American products have priced themselves out of global markets.
