I looked up the T-38 because I wasn’t familiar with it and thought it what was used as the MiG 28 in Top Gun.

It’s remarkable how the T-38 and F-5 are damn near identical aircraft.

Maybe I missed it in the OP but is it just for air shows?

Three F14 airframes are being sent to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Commission in Huntsville, Alabama.

They are to be restored as museum pieces.

Under the Maverick Act, it is permitted for the Commission to make one of the F14s airworthy. To be used for airshows and other appearances.

The Act stipulates that the jet must be demilitarized - cannot be capable of shooting or firing missiles.

The article states that the US has strictly regulated F14 components since Iran is the only remaining nation that still uses the F14 airframe in their military.

I was thinking of building an F14 model. Need to find a good one.

As an old Tomcat maintenance guy, it's gonna be a huge pain in the arse to get one of these birds flying again. Parts are scarce, all of the support equipment has been mothballed, who knows what's available for avionics components.

ostensibly to be used for airshows, but maybe giving pilots of modern fighters an opportunity to train against them for potential engagements with Iran?

With all due respect (and I know this info because I saw Top Gun Maverick twice), the Tomcat is now very old and shitty compared to that cool plane he flies in the beginning that can go Mach 10. Just saying.

Jets really aren’t my thing, but I was thinking of finding a good F-14 kit. Looks like Tamiya makes a 1/48 scale kit:

In my experience, you can’t go wrong with Tamiya kits. They’re always really good quality and go together with few, if any, issues.

There were 4 F5s doing laps over the neighborhood a couple of weeks ago. Flight aware said 1800ft and over 300kts.

It was a good show.

Should be the Goose Memorial Act. But seriously, I'd love to see one in person.

If you are ever around Pensacola, go check out the National Naval Aviation Museum. They have one outside. The museum is really cool.

Is the F-15 mothballed? I was at an air show at an Air Force base, when the announcer said...

quote:

"Ladies and gentlemen, the only aircraft to accelerate going straight vertical".

I also toured the USS Saratoga that was docked in Mayport, Florida. Those F-18's looked very small next to an F-14.

The F15 is still flying. One was shot down over Iran last month.

I've always wondered what squad or wing those "skull and crossbones" were from.

Badass.

Never happen. The Tomcat was retired because it was so damn expensive to fly. Really complicated machine with exotic technology that is impractical to replicate. Things like giant inflatable air bladders to help the wings sweep. The Tomcat was also a strange mix of what at the time were cutting edge digital tech coupled with old vacuum tube based analog gear. Gave it fantastic capability but also made it a bear to stay operational. When I was in the fleet, whenever they scheduled flight ops with Tomcats, it was policy to always have a spare aircraft on standby because of maintenance issues. Super Hornets are so reliable that it’s no longer necessary. Thats going to make it damn near impossible for a civilian org to keep one in flying condition.
