The Tomcat was also a strange mix of what at the time were cutting edge digital tech coupled with old vacuum tube based analog gear

Oceana, east coast fighter town

Their sister squadron was VF-41, the Black Aces. Both were deployed on the Nimitz early Med cruises.

Tomcat got the publicity (Top Gun) but the Hornet was my favorite on the Constellation.

Before that The Final Countdown had some nice shots of the tomcat.

Man the planes in final countdown were sexy. They were shining like a diamond. Must've been fresh out the paint booth.

the Tomcat is now very old and shitty

Yea, it is.

Operation and maintenance concerns aside, it would still be a formidable performer. It had very long legs, tons of range, tons of radar, tons of payload.

The hornet is better. Its cheaper and more reliable. But, the tomcat is a big arse boat. Its good at what it was designed for.

I worked on Tomcats for more than a dozen years, did five deployments on aircraft carriers for that job, taught Tomcat school, went through Hornet school, worked on Hornets a little bit. Needless to say, I always preferred Tomcats.

Husband was a Jolly Roger back in the mid ‘90s. He recently put together a concept album of F-14 songs (with the help of suno - hey, he’s a naval aviator, not a professional musician) about some of his experiences in the Tomcat. Mostly did it for nostalgia and to entertain some old Tomcat buddies, but a few of you F-14 fans here might get a kick out of it too.

They need to make as many of those as possible airworthy and preserve the rest. Think about how many Corsairs there are now. Or P-47 Thunderbolts. Etc. We need to keep as many copies of that beautiful lady as we can. SR-71 too.

I was an AE with A-4s....Then A-7s....My squadron was transitioning to FA-18s and I decided to get out. I never did a lot with the 18s.

Thanks - I’ll pass that on to him. I’m sure he’ll appreciate that F-14 enthusiasts are enjoying it, too. I wasn’t sure non-aviators would “get” a lot of it - glad some of it was able to transcend. He has 1000+ hours in the tomcat as a RIO and 2500+ hrs in it as a pilot, so a lot of the lingo is fighter pilot specific. The whole thing is based on his personal experiences - even the “Better Lucky Than Good” song - (which actually did happen to him…and yes, he still has that patch).

F-14A. Make sure it comes with a couple of spare engines.

TF-30 worked just fine in our USAF F-111F’s

Maybe if you guys stop getting them into flat spins they wouldn’t compressor stall out……
