During the course of several interviews at no point does he say this is to paint people in a bad way. This is something that the “news” has added on their own.
All he wanted to do was show the raw shite that nobody sees bc most people don’t have the stomach for it. Is it kind of a betrayal? Yeah I can see the argument for that, but he never made the movie to challenge the “hero” montra or to paint the USMC or military in general in a bad light.
War is fricked up and people that have never been in that situation, where it’s literally kill or be killed, you are so desensitized to humanity from it that you do things that Matt and Sarah in humanities 1000 couldn’t fathom and are then outraged that us “heroes” could act like that.
