U.S. cigarette smoking dropped to another all-time low last year, with 1 in 9 adults saying they were current smokers, according to government survey data released Thursday. Meanwhile, electronic cigarette use rose, to about 1 in 17 adults.

The preliminary findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are based on survey responses from more than 27,000 adults.

In the mid-1960s, 42% of U.S. adults were smokers. The rate has been gradually dropping for decades, due to cigarette taxes, tobacco product price hikes, smoking bans and changes in the social acceptability of lighting up in public.

Last year, the percentage of adult smokers dropped to about 11%, down from about 12.5% in 2020 and 2021.

E-cigarette use rose to nearly 6% last year, from about 4.5% the year before, according to survey data.

Smoking and vaping rates are almost reversed for teens. Only about 2% of high school students were smoking traditional cigarettes last year, but about 14% were using e-cigarettes, according to other CDC data.

So only about 1 in 10 people smoke ? Seems a bit low. That’s a good thing I would think.

I quit smoking almost 9 years ago, haven't had a smoke since. But just last night I had a dream and I was still a smoker, and running out of cigarettes, and had to go get more.

Nicotine is a hell of a drug.

I only know one person that still smoke cigarettes. The kind of people still smoking are usually friends with the kind of people that still smoke.

That 1 in 17 on e cigs? They can't be counting vaping? Seems like ALL college age kids are vaping, tabaco or better stuff.

I guess the best way to avoid the smoking addiction is to never smoke a single cigarette .

1 in 9 still seems high.

I’d have guessed 1 in 50 from my observations.

I was checking out at H-E-B and randomly looked at the cig case. Like $7 a pack for Marlboro lights and then saw $10 for Virginia Slims.

No wonder nobody smokes anymore…

Vaping is so trashy as is smoking. I can’t remember ever seeing anyone vape who didn’t look like they just came out of a dollar general on the way to a trailer park

I smell weed a LOT more than cigarette smoke. It's everywhere it seems.

Good… I smoke and consider it the worst habit anyone could possibly pick up… I actively go out of my way to tell young people to quit now… save the money you would use to buy a pack and put it somewhere separate from the rest of your funds… in ten years take that money and put a down payment on a house… you will have more than enough

I smoked until I was about 33 or so. It was far more common when I was growing up. I still chew nicotine gum though. Been on that shite for 12-13 years now

I tell my insurance company and my dating profile that I don't smoke even though I like a cigar every 2 months or so.
