Why? You still have to deposit it, I don't want to carry a check like that unless I have to.

There's no reason not to do a wire transfer and have it in your own account anywhere in the world in 24 hours or less.

I would for sure open an account or wire. This guy honestly probably wanted the cheapest option.
He has to have a bank account. I would have opened an account with the issuing bank. That way I didn't have to wait up to fifteen days for it to clear.

Why didn't they just have the money wired to their bank?

UPS will not insure cash, checks, money orders, etc., and the insurance is capped at $50,000 for goods.
To be accurate:

quote:

UPS does not accept for transportation, and Shippers are prohibited from shipping:
– Articles of unusual value, which shall be deemed to include, but are not limited to:
• Any Package with an actual value of more than $50,000, except that the actual value of Packages declared
in accordance with the Enhanced Maximum Declared Value provisions of Section 55.1 (“Maximum Declared
Values”) cannot exceed $70,000;
• Any pallet with an actual value of more than $100,000;
• Coins, cash, currency, bonds, postage stamps, money orders, and negotiable instruments (such as drafts, bills of exchange, or promissory notes, but excluding checks);
People need to read the fricking contract, in this case, the UPS® TARIFF/TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE.

Couldn't the bank nullify the original draft so it can't be cashed?

the whole point of a bank draft is its a guaranteed form of payment like a certified check so once its drawn, it cant be rescinded or canceled, its just like cash.

the real problem here is the bad advice because a simple electronic wire transfer directly to the persons account is the safest possible way to transfer money. not sure what the liability laws are but they should sue the bank who gave bad advice that caused this to happen.

there is regular theft of mail and if it was in any way marked as from the bank the mail workers for sure opened it and hit the lottery. find the postal worker who quit the next day and there is your thief

Almost looks like whoever told them this was the safest way to send the money was in on a scam to steal this bank draft.

Would be super easy.

1. Tell some clueless moron that bank draft via mail would be best.
2. Print out bank draft. Steal it.
3. Buy a UPS shipping label online, print it out using invisible ink (yes you can buy these cartridges for some printers). Apply to empty envelope.
4. Drop off envelope at UPS Store, ask for a receipt so it certainly gets scanned into their system immediately.
5. Next day, ink becomes invisible and envelope is unable to be identified at all, even if opened. The “package” containing the “bank draft” suddenly disappeared off of the face of the Earth while in UPS’s care.
6. ???
7. Profit

I sent a UPS overnight envelope early a.m. delivery from a Lafayette to New Orleans with 4 LSU Bama tickets. I sent them on the Thursday before the game and they didn’t arrive until Monday. The kicker is, I pid for insurance to cover $500 and I was told that the package wasn’t damaged, therefore I couldn’t make a claim. I will never use UPS willingly ever again. They are such a piece of shite to deal with.

You can't get UPS insurance for a negotiable instrument.

From the UPS carriage tariff:

"–
Checks.
UPS’s liability for a Shipment
containing a check or checks is limited
to the cost of stopping payment on and
reissuing the check(s), not to exceed
$100 per Package or pallet. In no event
shall UPS be liable for the face value
of the check(s)."

That's the first thing that came to my mind when I heard this story. That, or why wouldn't you pay to have the money wired?

The bank can't void the check or something so that no one can cash the original check? So the bank gets the money? WTF.. I'd be looking to kill somebody.
