A Canadian man says he’s broke after the United Parcel Service lost track of his inheritance.
The intended $846,000 delivery was a bank draft from TD Canada Trust, which still hasn’t refunded the lost fortune 10 months later. Instead, UPS offered an apology and $32 to pay for the mailing costs, according to a CBC News report.

Taylor sent the money through UPS from her lawyer about 270 miles away in Georgetown, Ontario, so Herbert wouldn’t have to worry about picking up the money. She obtained the bank draft in February after she said the bank advised it as the safest way to send the large sum. TD guaranteed Taylor and her husband, John, that the money would be replaced if the draft was lost, she said.
“They said a bank draft was more appropriate” for that amount of money, Taylor said. “Never in my wildest imagination did I think something like this would happen.”

The bank is refusing to refund the money unless Taylor signed an agreement to pay them back if someone cashes in the lost draft. She signed the agreement, but says the bank “never paid anyone a dime.” The bank also demanded she let TD put a lien against her house if the draft was cashed, but she refused.
“If the bank really wants indemnity, then UPS should sign it,” she said. TD sent CBC a general statement that “before we can agree to a replacement or reimbursement, we need appropriate security to be in place.” Herbert said he has maxed out his credit cards and desperately needs the money. “TD has the money. The money is actually sitting in an account with TD. Nothing has been stolen. It’s there. That’s my inheritance,” he said, adding that if he had the cash, “I would have been retired.”

So they lost a cashier's check?
Why isnt the bank the bad guy here?
Why didn't he buy insurance.

Until you get pulled over for speeding and a cop seizes all the money because they can.

I'm sure he meant pick the check up, not cash

Couldn't the bank nullify the original draft so it can't be cashed?

I agree, but it's always a good time to point out the bullshite that is civil forfeiture.

Yeah, the bank seems like the one not taking care of business here.

There's literally no reason that in 2017 this couldn't be done. It's not like some guys gonna walk up to a TD bank in Canada, cash a draft that isn't in their name for north of 800K and the bank isn't gonna verify that everythings legit before forking over that money. I mean come on. The Bank is being completely unreasonable. Especially since they're the ones that recommended to ship it UPS in the first place.

It's really on the bank. The money is in an account. It isn't like it was lost with the draft. The bank was just being difficult about it. Also, I saw that it has been resolved now that it went public.

Yes. The article should have been about the bank being a dick due to UPS losing a package.

They got their money

Yeah, NO DOUBT the institution that is asked to cash it will reach out and verify funds. Just note the account as "hold" and it wont be processed.....let the check casher try to argue! LOL (right before his felony arrest)

Well the bank likely doesn't even have $846k in cash laying around, they were sending the bank draft via UPS so someone didn't have to drive 270 miles to pick it up. Not pick up the cash, pick up the bank draft.

For that amount don't you normally have something wired to your bank, or simply open an account at the bank issuing the draft, then have an accountant or attorney manage that influx? I mean, a couple thousand for such an item seems like a smart thing to do.

Wouldn't this be written to so that only he could cash it? Mailing what equates to an unsigned money order seems so dumb that I can't even comphrend

Why would you not insure that?
