There's no way there isn't more to this story. All the bank has to do is cancel a check, that's like a $25 fee to the customer at most.

Why wouldn't this have been wired? No way I'm sending a check that large and a wire is $25 for an unlimited amount as far as I know, cheaper then mailing the check.

This story is someone telling lies or not telling all the story.

i would think in fact that they definitely could. went through a very similar deal just last week in fact. i donated 14k in the form of 2 cashiers checks from my bank, 1 for 12k and 1 for 2k. anyhow, they called and said they were sorry that they had washed the checks and could i re-issue them. the bank said that in this case they could only cancel and re-issue AFTER 90 days from the original date, as to insure that someone didn't try to double cash them or whatever.

ETA: its not my money out of pocket that I'm donating, its from a non profit event that i put on, just so i don't get the subtle brag posts...(but, it is one hell of a river party in arkansas that folks from all over the country come to, a lot from down there too)

I mean, it is TD Bank, not some small local bank.

Why not just have them open an account in your name and have them deposit the money in it?

For a $1000 check or something that's one thing to wait to see if someone cashed it, but you don't just deposit a $846k check without doing some fairly serious verification. I really don't see how worrying about it being "double cashed" is even a remote possibility.

The fact this person can't manage their finances is a separate issue.

Curious how fast they'll go through the money once they get it.

I read something that said like 80-90% of all inheritances are gone within the first year.

Why isnt the bank the bad guy here?

UPS will not insure cash, checks, money orders, etc., and the insurance is capped at $50,000 for goods. $850,000 is wire transfer money. frick a check.

#1 Should not have sent a draft, should have sent a check or wire transferred.
.
#2 should have purchased insurance at UPS. That's why they sell insurance. Looks like they went cheap and tried to avoid fees or the cost of a trip and got burned.

I don't feel sorry for them. If someone had $800,000 for me I'd be on a plane tomorrow.
