Depending on their current flight plan and ceiling. Some commercial jets and FAA regulations prevent the pilot from taking it to PJ heights (40k+). Also depends on the height of the storm.
Pilots will look at the radar and find pockets that are best to cut through, doesn't look like they did that based on reactions.

I'm speaking in terms of a passenger. When people travel by plane, they aren't usually the ones at the controls. You're an exception. So no, it isn't "patently" false. And I come from a FAMILY of pilots. That doesn't mean shite.

Not for nothing but both of the SW planes that had these engine failures had frequent routes to and from MSY.
