Update on the downtown library debacle

Now the architects and engineers aren't even responding to requests for updates from the city. I just want all those folks who said this wouldn't end up being paid for with tax dollars to be up to date. I predicted from day one we, the taxpayers, would end up holding the bag for this crap.

Yet again Wednesday, city officials said they've asked the architect who designed the building for a status update on where things stand – or stand with concern. It's been weeks since an official report from the firm about why assumed structural failures showed up in mid-April.
After hysteria calmed, designers and engineers were providing weekly updates – released every Friday. The reports outlined what engineers were doing to immediately stabilize, investigate and formulate a plan after a “simultaneous rupture” of key supports of a cantilevered section of the building.
The building was designed by Baton Rouge-based WHLC Architecture who has ignored repeated requests for information from WBRZ. The city has not heard from WHLC lately and asked again for an update on what is happening.
“Many of the people involved, whether is the architect or the engineers, are very concerned about where they stand in terms of liability, so that could be one of the reasons that they are reluctant,” Mayor Sharon Weston Broome said in her last public interview on the situation, back on May 18 with WBRZ.
In the days after the truss failure was noticed, frustrating library board officials who, following reports, summoned those involved with building the library to a May meeting.
But, the group asked to attend did not show up.
"I had hoped they would have shown up even if only to tell us they don't have any information yet," said board member Donald Luther at the time.
The contractor has warned of cost overruns associated with the structural failure.

Did they hire that all-women firm that built the bridge in Florida that collapsed two days after it opened?

Looks like everyone lawyered up.

They're almost certainly not responding every time some a-hole from the city calls or sends an email because they are in preparation for the inevitable lawsuit and only responding to formal requests through specific channels.
It seems to me the city is grandstanding a little bit by saying 'well, shucks, we called 'em!'

Meanwhile, the city has huge amounts of egg on its face as they've poured MILLIONS into revitalizing downtown and that entire area near Galvez Plaza in the North Street corridor. They have the old state capitol, the new stage/art deal, the freshly redesigned public green space in front of it, the Galvez, "town square," deal that the library abuts, etc.
The roads are still closed. Huge jacks are still in place protecting the building from further structural degradation. The construction site sits essentially untouched. A huge blemish on a beautiful area.
What a shitshow.

An owner never pays for design or construction flaws, only unforeseen conditions.

This:
What do you want them to say? There's no new news until the insurance and bond company lawyers reach an official mutual decision on (1) what happened, (2) who's fault it is or %'s of fault, and (3) what the remedy is. Then you know the cost of the fix and who pays. Their lawyers told them to shut up - everyone is following their script for when something like this happens.

I would bet that this structure will be taken down and also bet the architect doesn't have deep enough pockets.

Library was less than 90 days out from being turned over to the city. They had just started laying the concrete block flooring for the outdoor terrace.
The "fix" will take time. The building was basically finished. Massive amounts of demo will have to be done JUST to get to the 3 trusses that failed and any other steel that had been compromised.
Sharon Brooms and her Simpletons dont realize these things take time due to the scale and complexity of he design. Also, no one owes the stupid Library Board any ounce of information here. They can stick to their Dewey Decimal System and Shushing people. They have zero to do with construction.

Maybe in the real world. Wait and see how this municipal project turns out. We will be paying somehow.

they know what's going on. any public comment from SWB or Library Board is posturing to show public they are in control of a situation that they know they are not in control of. The less they are in control, the more public posturing they will do. Everyone's attorneys (BR included) are the only ones in control right now.
WBRZ needs to keep manufacturing "news" from this so people will go to their shitty website.

Of course not because they are going to have to demolish the entire building and the litigation costs are going to be staggering for this fiasco. No one knows who is responsible for the buildings failure yet either--engineers? which architecture firm is responsible since there are at least 2 involved? contractors? how many Bonds were issued that have to be litigated out?
LINK
The bottom line is that the building can't be salvaged and must be demolished--actually needs to be demolished sooner rather than later due to structural defects which render the building dangerously compromised for total failure.
