A Dallas police officer shot and killed a man after entering an apartment unit she believed was her own, police said.
The shooting happened at the South Side Flats before 10 p.m., about one block from the Dallas Police Department Headquarters.
In a news conference early Friday morning, Dallas Sgt. Warren Mitchell said the officer was heading home after working a full shift when she walked into an apartment unit she believed was her own.
After entering the unit, she was confronted by a 26-year-old man, identified by the medical examiner's office as Botham Shem Jean. At some point, the officer fired her weapon, hitting him, police said.
Officers responded to the scene and began to treat the victim, Mitchell said. He was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
The officer involved in the shooting was not hurt. She will be placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation, Mitchell said.
A large Dallas police presence was at the apartment overnight into Friday morning as the department's special investigation unit processed the scene.

Manslaughter Charges Pending
quote:
Police intend to seek a manslaughter charge against a Dallas officer who shot and killed a 26-year-old man Thursday night when she entered his apartment near downtown, mistaking it for her own.
"This is a very unique situation," Police Chief U. Renee Hall said at an afternoon news conference. "We have ceased handling it under our normal protocol as an officer-involved shooting."
Hall said that police are obtaining a warrant charging the officer, whom the chief declined to name until she is formally charged.
The chief said the officer's blood was drawn to test for alcohol and drugs, and the Texas Rangers have been called in to help with investigation.
Eta 2: Officer has been charged with manslaughter

A 30-year old off-duty Dallas police officer has been arrested and charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean on Thursday night.
Four-year Dallas-Fort police veteran Amber Guyger was taken into custody at 7:20 p.m., according to Dallas County jail records.
Officer Charged
Eta3:
quote:
An attorney for the family of a man shot dead by a police officer in the man's own apartment said a police affidavit shows investigators immediately sought evidence to discredit the victim. "They immediately began looking to smear him," said Lee Merritt, who represents the family of Botham Jean, who was shot dead in his own Dallas apartment Sept. 6.
quote:
A police affidavit shows that officers seized, among other items, 10.4 grams of marijuana and a marijuana grinder from Jean's apartment. Merritt said the search warrant showed investigators were immediately looking for drug paraphernalia, CBS Dallas / Fort Worth reports.

She should go to prison, but nothing will happen to her. Lets just be real about this.

What do you wanna bet they forgot to test for alcohol in her system?

I am 100% supporter of Police, but this shite here is flat out wrong. If a regular citizen did this they would be locked up for murder.

It's a sign of the times when a cop can't enter the wrong apartment without her safety being threatened.

Cop should be in jail.
But how did cop get in? Who leaves their door unlocked in a shitty apartment?
Something smells fishy here.

Any normal citizen would at least face some form of charges for an act like this.
She should too.

The really fricked up thing about this is that if he had tried to defend himself he would still be either dead or looking at capital murder charges.

How do you just walk into the wrong apartment? There are these things called "keys".

How is that relevant? It's not exactly a defensive stance.

Hold the frick on. If I walked into my neighbor's house and shot him, I would be charged with homicide. Administrative leave would be the least of my problems.

So you illegally enter someone’s home and murder them....
When they set her free, they will be setting a precedence for future killings?

Kind of agree with you in this case. I always thought the administrative leave was standard procedure for officer involved shooting in the line of duty. This wasn't in the line of duty.
Although it seems like more of a manslaughter or negligent homicide case than murder.
