Makes me smile (and go get out my Thai cook books for pad kra pao)

This made me think how if some Louisiana baws were the ones stuck they'd come out and ask for some Caniacs It's amazing the reports of how good spirits these boys have stayed in. They might need some counseling but this experience may just make them into some pretty extraordinary human beings.

With a current

Can someone explain how an isolated body of water in a cave has a current?

Reports are that they are actively pumping the water out ?

I'm not in Thailand so I can only speak from reports, perhaps I misread one but I swore it said they were battling a current. Maybe current conditions?

I imagine it essentially is an underground stream as water flows through it.

1) the caves were dry when the boys went in.
2) it rained all over the mountain. That water seeped into the ground and began draining downwards.
3) that water is still draining down (that's where the boys got the fresh-er water that they were licking off the walls of the cave.
4) that water continues to drain through the crevasses in the rocks.
5) that water fills low spots in the cave and when one is filled, the water flows over sills to the next low. That flowing water makes currents.

Remember the venturi effect from basic engine repair. When a cylinder narrows, what's flowing through it speeds up. The 'choke points' in the system are where the currents are strongest.

Spasweezy is right, it's an underground stream or river. Most caves are basically drainage systems; the flowing water actually created the space over millions of years.

RTF, not quite right.

Water gets into a cave two main ways...it either filters through tiny spaces over long periods of time, or enters via larger surface holes.

Water that has seeped in is clean. Think of "spring" or "artesian" drinking water. That stuff is clear and clean because the ground has filtered it. Thats the stuff on the walls and ceiling that the boys were drinking.

Water that has come in the "quick" route is surface water, having picked up dirt and leaves and other organic matter and bringing it directly into the cave. That is what happens with the flash flood and that is why it is so muddy.

Apparently in the world of cave diving this dive would not be considered tough in normal circumstances.

WHAT??? Geeze it's scary enough for me to look at on paper!

And thanks Rome for the answer to my question!

I’m selfish but can they attach a gopro-like device on one of the divers.

I want to see. I’m sure the movie will capture it accurately though.

I believe there are 5 remaining? Hope they can get them all on the next mission?

I assume that they've been leaving divers with the kids since they found them right? They don't go in and grab a few then leave the rest and say "Sleep tight kids, see ya'll tomorrow."

I can’t even look at the drawing of the cave route.

I would think they would take all 5 on the next trip.

I think that the doctor for sure is with them. I would think another diver.

And the issue with taking all 5 I think I understand is that they have to have more tanks than they are currently using as it's more people (duh) and more trips.

I wonder if there is space in the cave or if they have access to more/enough tanks.

Of course they won't, they help with flotation.

Up to here that's probably exactly what they did. Saves on oxygen at the far end, reduces CO2 and results in stronger people to rescue.

They might do it now that the number of people left is drastically reduced though. Might be better than to do another round trip tomorrow. We'll see, at this point we're all just watching anyway.

Dizzy specifically qualified his statement with "in the world of cave diving." The diver who died so far in the rescue attempt was a hero, but not a trained cave diver.

However, no one would purposely be diving here during monsoon season. We might seem crazy to most people but we don't need to make anything more difficult than it already is.
