That must be quite a story. Waveland was literally wiped off the map.

Katrina also ruined McComb, MS - which was nice small town - and greatly accelerated the downfall of Jxn (which was already on the way down).

We had talked to friends who were going to evacuate, and one uptown who wasn't.
I woke up and watched the hurricane go over Eden Isles and figured we'd lost our sail boat.
Then quiet, Then a friend from Missouri thought he saw our boat on top of of a house (it was the right size but the wrong color sail covers.)(Our boat survived.)
So did our friends and the people who came with them.
For three week, I had no leftovers. I used all the meat in our freezer. The clotes line almost wore out the clothes pins.
I have vague memories of who came when and who stayed and whoall were just passing though.
And then the storm everybody has forgotten hit western Louisiana and more friends went through hell.
One hasn't really recovered, another said sod it, life's too short and moved to Napa California to garden and eat well.

Yet another huge opportunity blown by Nola

One of my Dad's fishing buddies had a camp at La France, near Waveland. Few months before Katrina he offered to sell it to us, we said we'll buy it, then he backed out. After Katrina the only remnant we found of it was the bathtub.

So what do you charge you for the tub?

Another reminder to get out of Louisiana sooner rather than later.

Listening to WJBO with no power during Katrina. The host said we have Gov Blanco on the phone. I remember a trumpet fanfare and her press secretary announcing her before she started talking. Damndest thing I’ve ever heard.

Must have been north of the train tracks. Everything below it looked like a nuclear bomb was dropped.

I was working second shift at the time and watched coverage all day. After I went in to work I listened all night. One of the talk radio stations had near constant coverage with some reporting from NOLA. I just remember being in disbelief at what they were describing throughout the night. I got home at something til 1am, turned the tv back on and started watching TWC again. I fell asleep in the recliner, only to wake up to daylight with the coverage still playing.

You knew it wasn’t good when all the New Orleans news stations showed up and started broadcasting from Baton Rouge the night before. Something you’ll probably never see again.
We lived directly underneath the flight path for helicopters to and from New Orleans and the PMAC. Constant helicopters all day long. WAFB broadcast for almost a week straight and showed a ton of boat rescues.

Had a spearfishing trip at the rigs planned for that Saturday. Buddy was in town for it but got cancelled because of some stupid storm that wasn’t nothing.
But oh well, we (me, wife and buddy) went out along with wife’s cousin for possible setup and he got shitfaced acted like a huge douche and we just went home.
Morning, rough, turn on the news…. Told my buddy ”dude you gotta go” and then to wife, “babe, we gotta go.”
fricking hurricane.
Btw, no swingers comments, dickheads.

The house where I grew up is a couple of blocks from bayou St. John and had never flooded before because it’s on “high ground.” Ended up getting two feet of water from Katrina. What convinced my parents to evacuate on Sunday was the prospects of catastrophic wind damage. At any given time, we had 5-10 relatives staying at my place in Shreveport until late September. We had to replace some furniture pieces because of wear and tear. We also added on to our house in anticipation that it’d be used as a hurricane shelter again.

In my house in Metry. Just on the Metry side of the 17th Street canal. Headed to BR two days later. I remember being the only person on the road headed to BR.
7 years later was in Hoboken NJ for Sandy.

The stillness and quiet of the destruction in the aftermath....

Watched it from my back porch in Baton Rouge
Never lost power
Went back to work next day and then all hell broke loose and Baton Rouge doubled in population and my 20 minute drive to work became a hour and a half due to traffic for the next 6 months

We were far enough up in NELA that we really only rain. I was watching Foxnews and kept a lot of the footage.
Gustav was a bitch, though.

I remember this board that weekend, so well. The Katrina thread from Friday- Sunday would be fascinating to read again.
A specific post- Katrina memory: I had no electricity and I went to LSU Chimes to eat and get some AC and they were showing helicopters removing people from roofs and attics and people at tables were crying all around me.
