Retro games can fetch a hefty price at auctions, but a pristine, never-opened copy of Super Mario Bros. for the NES raised the bar.
A game that cost $25 when it first came out in 1985 sold for more than half a million dollars thanks to a few important factors.
A sealed Super Mario Bros. for the NES went for $660,000 at an auction Friday, according to Heritage Auctions.
The Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction featured several classic video games in mint condition, but this copy of Mario's first adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom brought in the big money.
The reason for its big price tag was an unused hangtab on the back of the case along with it being the fourth version of Super Mario Bros. produced, according to Heritage Auctions.

They’ll be blowing dust out of that thing in no time...

Nintendo just had a big 35 year anniversary event for Mario
so the timing of that probably helped drive the price up more

Can you imagine if you collected unopened NES games in the 80s instead of baseball cards?

Nostalgic items are selling at crazy prizes right now. If you had the time, you could easily make a decent living just buying and selling cards right now.

Me and a couple of other folks played Defender for 32 hours straight one time. It seemed like about 8. Time flies when you are having fun.

I’ve got Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt, Super Mario 3, and Kid Icarus in a box at home. Opened of course, but they still work. Any idea how much they are worth?

Yeah, the next truly excellent Zelda game I’m buying two copies of it at launch and will sell it 30 years later.

Take a look at eBay to get an idea of what you can get for them not at auction. Kid Icarus was pretty sought after not too long ago.

I actually have the Special Edition Breath of the Wild box set unopened and put away for that exact reason. Was able to get my hands on it for preorder and then got the regular game to play on my Switch.

That collection will fetch you about $50 at your local resell shop. I just bought Mario 3 for my kids recently for about $20. They have had a blast playing it.
