Possibly, but you realize the CEO is the legal departments boss right not the other way around right?
Either way, all felt comfortable enough to basically say, deal with it.

The public doesn't realize that the captain has final say over the aircraft. Just because you bought a ticket doesn't give you the right to not listen to the airline. You fly by following their rules, not your own. If the flight was overbooked, overweight, whatever, they can remove people from the flight. I've been on flights where we were overweight with fuel and passengers, so they asked some to get off. I've been on overbooked flights, and single travelers have voluntarily gave up their seats so families on board could stay together.
The doctor is a POS thinking he is above others just because he is a doctor and not listening to the crew. GTFO the plane $&@?

I thought the maximum allowed was $1300?

Some of y'all obviously have no concept of public relations.

One is cash, the other is an airline voucher.
Depending on how bad the airline is, you could argue $2500 in vouchers is worth less than $1300 cash.

I think people above a certain waist size should be asked to leave first

United is now struggling to contain fallout from the incident. On Tuesday, the top trending topic on Twitter in the U.S. was #NewUnitedAirlinesMottos, with users suggesting slogans such as "not enough seating, prepare for a beating."
United Continental (UAL) shares, which weathered the storm on Monday, dropped by about 4% on Tuesday.

Here's one reason why you go ahead and get off the flight and not make a scene....if you don't want your dirty laundry aired out

UAL 52 wk low was at 37.41..this dip isn't something insurmountable.

I understand how bad the public relations hit is, and I hope this may help end the "overbooking" type of policies that airlines have been pulling, but even with that I have no sympathy for any injuries the doctor incurred when he would not leave his seat after being informed that he had to leave or he would be forcibly removed. Any compensation the doctor receives for being bumped, I am fine with, but I hope he gets $0 for injuries incurred while 3 security agents had to remove him from his seat.

Yeah I don't care he was a doctor (or even a shitty one). He shouldn't have been removed because UAL sucks at logistics.

crazy situation all around. Bottom line, it's remarkable they think this was a good idea, whether they had the right or not. His profession doesn't really matter but physically dragging a 70 year old passenger in the age of cell phone videos is just unwinnable.
That said, its interesting how appalled the passengers were but not appalled enough to give up their seats.

The doctor being a POS does not directly correlate to United's actions. Dealing with a POS does not give you the right to be a POS and more importantly doesn't give your public image a pass.
There's absolutely no reason for an airline not to have a policy to continue offering vouchers at something like $400/ 10 minute intervals until they get all the volunteers they needed. At $2500/ $5000/ hell free rides for a year in the day of smart phone videos you are still much better off than ever forcibly removing a passenger.
What if this guy got a concussion and died? He's a jackwagon but the airline still is screwed.

This wasn't overbooking, this was a problem with having flight crews properly positioned for business the next day.
They put 4 members of a flight crew on the plane at the last second despite it being full and no one taking the offer for accepting a bump.

Maybe the airline could have incentivized them to do so?
It would have been cheaper than the billion dollar hit UAL took today in its market cap.

You can afford a billion hit when you started at 22.5 billion.
