You’ve simply danced around the core issue, which is that you want to avoid your child having a tantrum at any cost,

This attitude precisely creates the tantrums. How many parents have realized that they need to teach their kids to self soothe (not overschedule, not cater to every whim, sometimes you need 45m in the playroom just messing with toys and not being entertained, etc.)

It's child psych 101 (first day of class!), like with dogs, that you punish behaviors you don't want repeated, and reward the ones that you do. Parents that do the lazy thing, which they've always done, long before any flight, is reward tantrums. So they generate more of them.

But screw the other passengers. Lazy, soy parenting.

Why is this guy getting downvotes. They give everyone slippers in business class.

I'm in international first class a lot. Slippers and socks in the amenity kits. The amount of people that choose to wear the socks without the (ill fitting and cheap)slippers is overwhelming. It's disgusting. They walk into the lavs with those socks which act as sponges to soak up every type of imaginable fluid one can think of and then wear them in their lie flats. Truly noxious.

Seeing/hearing grown basketball Americans do the same is not understandable and infuriating.

Yeah, they are kids. Which means, their parents should've taught em something about civility. Try it.

I’d argue what is uncivilized is to have absolutely no compassion for a child in such circumstances and holding them to the same level as adults. Do not preach to me about civility when you have no compassion towards children.

Here’s what I think is the actual reality: while you might be mildly embarrassed by your kids playing on their iPad for five hours, you are more embarrassed and more inconvenienced by your kid throwing a tantrum.

Why would one be more embarrassing than the other?

What do you expect their parents to do? Beat their kids arse on the plane when their ears start hurting instead of trying to distract them with an iPad?
Uh, yes actually. That is exactly what I want them to do if their kid starts misbehaving

A kid using their iPads with the noise on at a reasonable volume warrants beating their arse in your opinion?

The why is irrelevant. Are you not more embarrassed when your kid throws a tantrum in public than you are when your child listens to their iPad out loud?

Also, I notice you completely ignored the “inconvenience” bit, so we might be close to the mark.

I would be embarrassed if my kids had iPads period. I feel bad for them. Not their fault that their lazy parents took the pacifier out of mouths and handed them and iPad.

Agree. The original point was that it’s acceptable to take your shoes off

Yet another rule that must exist only because certain groups are incapable of self-governing.

Kids and adults should use ear buds in public. No Bluetooth speakers.

Let's see whether this new rule is enforced across the board, evenly and equally against everybody, including all demographics.
