Pay the money and deal with it when you get home. I had a large group flying AA and they charged us for baggage. I was told first bag is free and AA refunded our money. All handled after the trip with no incident.

Airline employees work a lot harder than most people, and generally for substandard pay. Dealing with the traveling public is a major bitch these days. That guy deserved what he got.
