My dad was a part of a union, though he didn’t have union protection in his later career jobs.

Even he said 20+ years ago they were outdated, especially in the south. They had one guy that was incompetent that was paid way more than his worth to do BS work because of seniority and it’s hard to fire.

Now, he said it was a totally different ball game in NE and some mid-west ones. He mentioned they didn’t have those issues in those regions — the unions had a lot of pull, but they also worked better with he companies. If the union official found out they had a probably guy from company management, they would give the guy 3 options 1) shape up 2) resign or 3) you’ll have an “accident”. Not sure if still the same way.

That’s not surprising. People in the south are more often than not lazy and fat.

You are generalizing that all unions are the same. Some have their place and do a lot of good for their brothers. Others not so much. The same can be said for many things.

Fair enough. My only interaction with Unions is my FIL complaining about the union protecting bad workers and a friend who is a lab tech in NY who says they cap her raises with scales.

The better unions will listen to its members when they complain about certain other workers. The complaints have to be made by other union members, and not management, for some actions to be taken. It's not always a free pass just because you pay union dues.

I don't know about that.

My dad worked for a huge player in petrochem. 37 years in 1 plant, minus some trips they sent him on to other plants to teach others.

He'd be hard pressed to ever say anything bad about his employer, but even he said that without his unions support he would have suffered consequences for some of the safety stand-downs he initiated.

Companies care about safety big time.......

My union is 100% dependent on contractors.

Now, the contractors themselves came up through the union apprenticeship, but they pick the apprentices they want. I'm not guaranteed a job.

I think it's awesome. When I get called up for a job, it's because the contractor is pleased with my work.

Nice thought but history says otherwise. Some of the wealthiest employers had no problem working employees to death. Unions did not appear out of the mist, things got so bad they had to exist. Old days the wealthy had paid armies (usually wearing a badge) to beat and kill folks into submission.

Bring back the FCC law that promoted equal time

Deny US citizenship to foreign nations only going through the process to own US media

And this right here is why Republicans can’t win a culture war.

You give our technocrats all the tools they need to keep us down. Joe Biden and the own nothing and eat bugs Blackrock crowd thanks you for your sacrifice.

I can also tell you that the vast majority of union reps(outside the company) that I have worked with are radical democrats with some being ardent communists.

I've always thought that unions were one of the things that prevented a real struggle between communism and capitalism in our country. Union members tend to be pretty conservative on many social issues. They just want their piece of the pie.

Back before they came about, things like sweat shops, company stores, scrip, child labor, etc were causing real divisions.

I think a relative balance between unions and companies, along with a free press are some of the things that make us unique.

Are they free from corruption? No. But then again, neither are businesses. Heck, all you have to do is read about the old captains of industry. And it exists down to the small entrepreneurs. It's human nature. It's like the old saying about watching sausage being made.

Couldn't agree more. I work for a company that is unionized locally except for management, etc. Another facility in STL isn't, and the same position I'm in pays about $12 hour more. It definitely protects employees who aren't worth a f***, and there are plenty of them. Plus, the union "steward" is a total knucklehead. Never regretted joining that crap. Too much of a money racket.

Could be plant by plant — most of the ones he worked at would be all in your arse over safety. Feel like I’ve known about OSHA violations since I was 8. As an aside, despite never working in a facility myself, between my dad, the area I grew up in, etc, I fully understand everything going on in the Refined cartoon. Especially that pig nosed fricker.

I agree with you that unionization is not the answer, but what do people do when a company goes from a great place to work to one where it becomes unhealthy and stress filled?

I wouldn't want to unionize my workplace...because it's a good place to work already.

Last place I would have voted for a union because it did suck (thanks to mergers and acquisitions). Which is why I left.

Lesson: Don't suck and your employees will be less interested in a union.
