Unions are outdated. It is 2023 not 1923

Joe Biden's love of unions

I work in labor relations and fight unions for a living. I can go to bed soundly every night, knowing I help fight corrupt union leaders who take workers' money in the form of union dues and offer them absolutely nothing in return. So what do unions really do?

1. They protect the bad employees at the expense of the good ones. I have seen hundreds of grievances and the vast majority are ones regarding a bad employee who should have been terminated. These are the vocal "rah-rah" union supporters in my experience.

2. They prevent companies from rewarding good employees. Why should you work hard if your pay is dependent on a wage scale in a CBA? It is much like communism in this regard.

3. Unions stifle a company's growth by taking up management and some union members' valuable time doing contract negotiation, impact bargaining, grievance handling, arbitrations, etc.

4. The bring in the "us versus them" mentality in the workplace instead of everyone being on the same team. It is harder for frontline management to get a good working team with union stewards in the middle causing issues.

5. Last but not least, union members pay union dues and get nothing in return. (if they are good employees)

I can also tell you that the vast majority of union reps(outside the company) that I have worked with are radical democrats with some being ardent communists.

Dare I say the common blue collar worker does not know how to negotiate their worth? Unfortunately they then become pawns for more corrupt leaders.

I have problems with unions but to deny their usefulness is being willfully obtuse. They are a powerful employee voice at times to upper management. There is a lot wrong with unions too.

Thomas Jefferson warned about "monied corporations" controlling America. Unions are a necessary evil to combat this. There are strength in numbers (whether it be a group of workers or a few corporations that basically have a monopoly on a certain industry), and that is the whole idea.

My dad always said “unions are for people who are too scared to talk to their bosses”

After working in several union plants and salt mines, as a contractor, union workers suck. They don’t give a shite about getting work done. They’re just looking for the next break time.

This! Welders don’t make cheap now and has become a supplemental trade. There was a boom of welders that went to trade school instead of college the past 10 years so now everyone is a welder and the pay is shitry now

Watch how the UAW will help crush the automobile industry in Michigan. They are putting a constraint on them that they can't handle. At the same time Elon is pumping out cars every few seconds. You hate to see it for those good guys working at GMC, Ford, etc. They are being led astray. Sure they'll get more money but look at what the LEADERS are demanding for them. It will hamper business growth.

Like all things, you need balance

Capitalism (robber baron stuff from the late 1800's) was bad

Communism is just bad in general

Most things with ism in them sound good in theory but in practice, over time, human nature creates systems where some are more equal than others.

Modern technology is pushing wealth and power to fewer and fewer folks and it is more global than national. A union that actually fights for its members to balance owners and workers is good, the problem how to not approach either extreme. Unions found seed a century ago because we were approaching wage slavery, a point we are rapidly approaching now.

The easy patch is to blame the other side when reality suggests both sides work out a realistic position based on Game Theory and not some "ism".

#metoo. I have about 400 employees under me. Unions are a huge drain on our resources. They breed decisiveness and they often protect bad employees who make their coworkers have to work harder. Even though other employees want an employee fired, the union will go against its membership to protect slugs, criminals and crazy employees. They use union dues for trips to nice locations for "training."

I have seen this so often. It is wild when the union reps go against the vast majority of due paying members to protect the bad apples

I can see the argument for private employee unions. May not agree with it, but I can see it.

Public employee unions should be banned.

I think in theory unions can be a good thing and have a place in balancing out power... but in practice they are usually just disgustingly corrupt and unnecessarily political.

ETA: as the FTC increasingly refuses to regulate monopolies and pseudo-monopolies I think people are going to start thinking about unions again. If the FTC did its job effectively and efficiently ( ) a lot of unions might not be necessary because of healthy competition.

The biggest problem with unions is that they are stuck in a blue-collar 1950’s mentality arguing over seniority, pay scales, ticky tack complaints, and protecting obvious screw ups.

That said, I can absolutely see an opportunity for a white-collar union that still lets companies reward the best employees while putting a stop to much of the nonsense that office workers have to deal with. Only recently have employees gained a little bit of clout and companies are doing their best to claw it back.

Without saying the company that I work for, since the beginning of the pandemic, the company let go of a lot of people. Somewhere close to 1000 people across the country lost their jobs, and close to 600 of those were in the corporate HQ. They have not rehired and 90% of those jobs are permanently gone.

However, the company profits soared, and the volume of business grew, along with the job responsibilities. Most employees are overloaded and stressed from handling too many responsibilities, but management does not see it. The senior company exec sends out messages complimenting the employees, while telling them , "we must work harder to achieve our goals", and "achieving our goals is its own reward" all while ignoring that everyone is already "doing more" and ignoring the inflation that's taken 20% of the employees' purchasing power away from them.

I agree with you that unionization is not the answer, but what do people do when a company goes from a great place to work to one where it becomes unhealthy and stress filled?

As for me, I'm ready to retire. The reason I haven't is I'm remote, nobody hovers over me, I'm paid extremely well and I perform a job nobody else has the experience for except one other person, and he's just one year younger than me and has a countdown clock running in his office to his retirement. I can say, "NO" when someone tries asking me to add some new work or report to my already full schedule. It surprises management when someone says "NO". I already work many evenings until 7:30 - 9:00pm, and sometimes, because of the international clients, have meetings at 4:00am.

But not every employee is in a position to say "NO, I am at 100% already. You have to take away something to add something more."

Without a union, please explain how employees speak up in unison to let a company know they are tone deaf and overworking their staff?
