Not in the day of automation.

Or just close the location(s) attempting to unionize.

I did some asset management contract work for starbucks a few years back and I'll say that being in those places for extended periods of time gave me a new appreciation for what they do. They basically have to learn a new language and have to know an infinite amount of drink ingredient combinations and they have to do it on the fly. I'm not saying they're irreplaceable skilled labor, but there's definitely more to it than just filling cups. The employees are all kinda social outcasts/misfits for the most part, but they're almost all pretty nice people.

Starbucks should respond with:

100% drug free workplace
No visible tattoos or piercings
Only natural colored hair
Uniform shirts/pants/hairnets
Zero tolerance late/no-show policy

I know its raciss, sexist, hobophobic, trainsphobic and whatever-phobic...

They will be. Right now the mommas of the world don't want their kid working a minimum wage job. We'll get over that hump soon.

i mean maybe but why would a high schooler go work Starbucks when they could go lifeguard, babysit or any other less shitty job for comparable or better money. Jobs that are still struggling to find people.

Starbucks offers good enough benefits that are appealing to people over 26, under 26 is still going to be on their parents insurance.

They also also tuition reimbursement of some kind, so these folks might want to consider that and go get a college degree that is useful.

Link?

They unionized all the one's around Richmond and they still look open (I wouldn't know for sure as I've only been in one like 5 times in my life, I make excellent coffee).

The interwebs say that 200+ have unionized in the past couple of years. Which granted, is a teeny fraction of the 9,000 company owned stores in the US. This article gives actual information on what Starbucks is doing to fight them. Like giving new enhanced benefits only to non-union members.

It's entertaining to me as a year or two ago Bernie Sanders came to town for a Starbucks unionization rally. One of the kids on my team said they were going and I laughed...he got offended. I said, why do baristas need a union, its not like coal miners or pilots?

NPR (hold your nose but no paywall) But shows how to bust unions

Emeril's restaurant group tried this crap back in the day. It didn't go well at all and was dropped with the quickness. I think Emeril used to do the nose candy, so he probably understood.

I agree. But if they want a better standard of living, staying at Starbucks isn't the answer unless you are management.

Entry level employees want leverage but really don't have anything to bargain with. Starbucks will just automate.

Low level employees are competing vs illegals, teenagers, prison parolees...J-1 students.

The J-1 students are 10x more productive than the native population.

Nah. I’m sure that you’d like to think that your corporate job entails a great deal of intelligence and talent, but it really doesn’t.

Just the lazy ones.

I’m no fan of unions but this isn’t entirely accurate. Hundreds of their stores have voted to be unionized. Some have closed but not many. They positioned themselves as a woke arse liberal company for years and this accumulated a huge number of woke arse loser employees. They are now reaping what they sowed.

Every single Starbucks I go to, which is not that many anymore, have at least one if not several purple haired, nose ring, tatted up “they/them” moving at sloth speed and talking like they are high on something. So yes they are voting to unionize and trying to turn this into a career gig because no one else would hire them. And that’s in the south. I can’t imagine what their liberal la-la land stores look like.

About the only thing that will save Starbucks from being another company murdered by the union leeches is if a Republican becomes president and gets the NLRB off their arse. Until then they will be in a struggle to survive. Their prices are already stupid high for coffee drinks. If they cave to this mess their business model won’t be sustainable. People aren’t going to pay $10 for a coffee drink and a microwave muffin plus 20% tip.

TLDR: They are getting exactly what they deserve.
