The three-day “Golden Spike” celebration opens on Friday at Promontory Summit, 66 miles (106 km) northwest of Salt Lake City, where the Central Pacific Railroad from the west was joined to the Union Pacific Railroad from the east on May 10, 1869.

Now a national historic park, the wind-swept site saw the culmination of a six-year feat of 19th-century engineering that transformed the American West as the nation was emerging from a bloody civil war. The festivities will feature full-size working replicas of the two steam engines that faced each other, nose to nose, in an iconic photograph taken of a celebration held the day the cross-country rail line was completed.

Not a huge fan of UP but gotta admit this is pretty awesome.

You ever want to see what Asperger's looks like, pull up to a Class 1 mainline during a steam excursion.

Are they going to hire a bunch of Chinese to role play as slave labor for the event? Maybe get a couple of burly guys to slap them around a bit for authenticity.

Aren't the replica engines there all the time? The locomotives in the picture are more modern than the ones there in 1869.

I thought I read that the UP was sending one of their Big Boys locomotives built in the 1940s that has just been completely refurbished as a special attendee.

They did; that's the one in the picture on the left. They ran it in an excursion last weekend.

A railroad enthusiast friend told us that there is an organization made up of descendants of the Chinese labor imported to build the lines.

Don't even need a water heater. I had guys jumping up and down (seriously) when I came by with a SD90MAC-H in the lead.

Some serious freaks in the foamer crowd.

Apparently PC culture in play with them talking up the Chinese as the UP was built mostly with Irish.

The Central Pacific is the one that used boatloads of Chinamen.

I like opening my window and letting my arm hang out. That pisses off foamers every time I go by them.

My cousin reminds me of this every year. He retired from the Union Pacific and May 10 is my birthday.

Foamers bust a nut when you roll by in a BNSF unit that has an older paint scheme. Heck we have a few older units (used mostly for yard switching) that are still Santa Fe or BN. They go apeshit over those.
