If you need the government to stop you from making poor health decisions, you should probably look into therapy.

The government is poised to announce a ban on junk food advertising online and before 9pm on TV from 2023, as Boris Johnson looks to deliver on his pledge to tackle the UK’s growing obesity crisis.
The new measures, which will be some of the toughest marketing restrictions in the world, will heavily impact the more than £600m spent by brands on all food advertising online and on TV annually.
The 9pm pre-watershed ban on advertising TV products deemed to be high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) could cost TV broadcasters such as ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky more than £200m a year in revenue.
The online ad ban would affect all paid-for forms of digital marketing, from ads on Facebook to paid-search results on Google, text message promotions, and paid activity on sites such as Instagram and Twitter. It is estimated that more than £400m is spent on advertising food products online in the UK annually.

I don't know why, but I'm always surprised when I read about new laws in other western countries that restrict freedoms. Instead of promoting healthy living, raising children to understand the dangers of unhealthy eating, and having self control, let's pretend like this stuff doesn't exist.
I also realized that I just typed that and we have restrictions on smoking and how alcohol can be marketed. So, I'm being a bit hypocritical.

It's not going to stop anyone. It just gives politicians the "warm and fuzzies" that they "did something" and creates an argument against those who lack any self-accountability whatsoever.
"I know I weigh 450lbs. But if they would just stop showing hamburger commercials I wouldn't eat them. It's not MY fault I'm morbidly obese. It's YOURS!!!!!!"

So it's not just American's who are total fatasses anymore?
Welcome to the club y'all. I'll put some hot cakes on the griddle and some chicken in the fryer.

Oy, you got a license to advertise before 9 PM?
God the UK is so fricking backwards, it could see it's own arse.

Junk food sucks and our country needs to get healthier, but I’m glad we told them to go frick themselves in ‘76

Has nothing to do with the government but how impressionable the human brain is. Advertising and marketing works otherwise it would not be a trillion dollar global industry. If a country can reduce their overall spending on healthcare and create a healthier populace simply by changing advertising why not do it for the greater good? Would your rather have more hot chicks or less hot chicks? Should we let fentanyl/opioid producers advertise during the day and during children's programming?

Ads don’t cause obesity. Don’t blame the companies for some fatass eating a gallon of ice cream a day

Ads influence behavior that leads to bad choices ultimately resulting in obesity.

If they don't take the ads off YouTube and Netflix it's not gonna do much to stop the children viewing them.

It’s almost like big business lines the pockets of politicians

There aren’t commercials for crack but people still do crack.

Politicians can pretend that they made a difference.

I mean NYC banned 2 liter sodas, and the idea might piss you off, but no one noticed the change really, it’s about building healthy habits but it does feel forced
