To be honest, professor didn't even need to bring up MLK. He could have just referred to the syllabus. If it's in his syllabus that he doesn't allow students to retake tests for any reason, then that would be all he had to say.

For example, I had a professor in college who gave me a straight up zero on an exam and 2 other assignments for 2 days I missed in class. Thing is I missed those class days because my Dad had just died, and I definitely was in no mental state to to class and take tests. I went to the professor hoping to be able to make up the exam I missed. I begged and begged him, even showed my dad's obituary so he knew I wasn't lying. But he would not budge. He stated that in his syllabus, he does not allow test retakes for any reason. Special circumstances he will allow you to postpone tests, but only if you talk to him before time for the test.

I made a D in the course. I thought the professor was a giant Dick. Tbh, I still think he's a giant dick. But I somewhat respect it though, he had his expectations clearly aligned, and I didn't follow through with the expectations provided. I missed class without notifying him. I wanted a special allowance for my situation, and many times those are just not possible.

Tl;Dr All professor should have to do is stand by his syllabus. The Dean is then supposed to stand by the professor in that instance. Not to mention, George Floyd's death was tragic, but frick, none of them knew him personally. You shouldn't be able to say you're grieving over him if you never met the man in his life.

Jesus. That is a power trip hungry dick head. Honestly, I would probably have to take a couple of weeks off if my father had died while I was in college. Sorry your went through that. But, life happens even in tragedy. There's lessons in it for all of us.

Remember that MLK famously said that people should not be evaluated based on the "color of their skin"

But the content of their grades

That really sucks you had to go through that, but I respect the hell out of your viewpoint looking back on it, and every other person in this country should probably have the same outlook on life.

Good to know the people that someone may hire to do the taxes for their business (or themselves) with have gotten a free pass at some point because they are black.

You really think that hasn’t been happening for the past 50 years?

On UCLA's FB page, 7 of the first 10 posts were BLM related. Two others were LGBT.

Also, does anyone else find it exceptionally condescending that a group of non-black students asked for the black students? If they were so troubled, couldn’t they just ask themselves?

you people still refuse to pay attention

the non-POC were using their white privilege in a positive manner (FOR ONCE) to push for change

it's not a handout if the whites are doing the asking

Huh?

So, if I ask you to give my cousin $20 for doing nothing. And you give it to him, then it's not a handout to him because he didn't ask for it?

It's not only condescending, it's also straight up racist. Democrats in the antebellum period defended slavery, in part, by claiming they were protecting their "property" from the horrors of the real world. This behavior is merely an extension of that.

Absolutely. I'm a freaking adult. I don't need anyone else taking it upon themselves to speak for me.

Maybe, but eventually taxpayers will have enough of all of this.
