New YorkCNN —

Tyson, a major US producer of beef, pork and chicken, is betting on protein that comes from insects.

The meat processor said on Tuesday that it has invested in Protix, a Netherlands-based insect ingredients maker. Tyson is not only taking a minority stake in the company, but is working alongside it to build a US factory. That facility will use animal waste to feed black soldier flies, which will then be turned into food for pets, poultry and fish. Tyson did not disclose the financial specifics of the deal.

Those flies are not going into human food, at this point. “Today, we’re focused on more of [an] ingredient application with insect protein than we are a consumer application,” said John R. Tyson, chief financial officer of Tyson Foods.

In nature, birds eat lots of insects. Their bodies developed to process insects into meat.

Adding insects back to a chicken's diet will help them convert grain more efficiently. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I mean, if you could engineer giant caterpillars that had marbling like wagyu, or maybe a tuna like consistency...I'd at least try a steak

Friend of mine worked for the shark tank startup in Austin that made protein powder out of crickets for food additive in third world countries. They lasted about 3 years before a principal investor backed out and they had to close up shop.

Personally, I can't wait until Tyson pumps out an 8 pound maggot. Look what they've done to the chicken! Let's hope the resulting human-head-sized flies don't escape containment at the maggot farm!

In all seriousness, as a chicken feed alternative, this move makes sense for Tyson. Ya just gotta look past all the "You will eat the bugs......" nonsense.

I worked with some Tyson dudes in Sioux City, Iowa.

They were all smart. All degreed from A&M schools. Bunch of corn bred dudes with first rate knowledge and technology of farming and honestly, rates of product loss.

Great problem solvers.

Tyson knows what they are doing.
