Two Years Ago This Month: Work From Home

I recently took a business trip to see a customer in Shreveport. I had forgotten what it was like to go to an office, interact with coworkers, and generally have a 'normal' work day. It was fun to be back to normal even though I was going to their workplace and not mine.
The company I work for is in the software business. I don't see them ever having a normal office environment again. Even though we are HQ'd here in Bham, our CEO lives and works in another state. Several of our C Level executives that still live in Alabama have moved out of town to their lake house or out in the country. While productivity has stayed the same or increased, long term I don't see how you effectively train people, develop a culture, or develop professional relationships. Frankly, I can't stand it much longer.
Anyone else in this boat? I wouldn't mind a flex schedule, but man I sure would like to be in an office again with coworkers. Trying to get shite done internally with Teams and Zoom gets old quick.

I like the structure of an office day. And I don't really have a choice anymore.
Edit: I don't need the structure; I like the structure. I was just as effective at my job at home but I hated being home all the time since I live in an apartment.

100% work at home is terrible for socializing and interacting with people, which is basically where we are at as a culture now due to social media obsession. I'm with you; I think a mix of home office and in office work is healthy. How else will the secretary get filled?

I've been working from home exclusively for 2 years now. While I really do enjoy the flexibility, it does kind of lock you in at your current job. I wouldn't mind finding another job somewhere with a more leadership role but I really don't want to do that remotely. I would rather go in and get to know my co-workers and employees face to face

No, I've worked remotely for 10 of the past 11 years. I couldn't imagine working from an office again.

I still sort of have the option, basically just WFH on days I don't feel like going in or really don't need to go to a site or the office.
Saying that, I need to be in an office at less 2-3 days a week. I'm not productive and feel disconnected when not on a site or in the office.
I need attention and must talk to ppl in person

We went to flex about 6 months ago with currently no plans to ever go back full time in my department.
I could go in every day if I wanted to but it would be pretty pointless since my building is mostly empty most days.
I like flex and think it's probably an ideal mix for me.

I just function differently when I am working from home. If I'm at work and chat with a coworker for a few minutes, that feels normal to me. If I am at home and not literally sitting at my computer actively working on something, I feel like I am stealing time. It may seem strange (and kinda does to me), but that's how I feel.
I absolutely can't stand working remotely. Not only from a productivity standpoint, but I need to have my home life and work life separated. It was dreadful when Covid first happened and we all worked from home...waking up and walking into my living room to "work" was painful.
However, I feel like most people like working remotely. I know a ton of people in my office do. Now, whether that's because of the freedom that brings, or because they know they can frick off with little repercussion, I don't know. But I suspect it's likely both.

i've always been work from home with a lot of travel in this job for 10 years. week before spring break, i met with 3 customers in Houston, said bye to my boss who was in from San Antonio, then went to east east Texas to fish for spring break and he went back to SA. no cell signal or internet for about 4 days solid. left there and went straight to the valley and all of the sudden everybody was talking about covid and i was in a bar watching Big XII tournament when they shut it and the NBA down.
since then i've really "traveled" for work maybe a dozen times. valley, OK, el paso, houston, tyler, DFW, etc.
my boss, who i do half my trips, with literally... and i really mean literally, left San Antonio the first time in 2 years in late February. he did not leave SA from March 2020 to Feb 2022. he just got a tesla so i'm hoping he's ready to start getting back out there with me.

Funny you say this, I to have that weird anxiety. I'm not an hourly employee, but something feels wrong at times that I'm doing personal stuff between tasks.

We can WFH when necessary. I love being in the office, though. But I think a lot of that centers around interpersonal relationships, and we don't have any shitbags in our office. Some satellite locations are different, and I can see the appeal of WFH if I were assigned there.

Been working from home over a year now.
I keep everything restricted to 1 room so I'm not working all over the house. It's been fine wrt communications and work products. Given fuel costs, it's been even better.

I’m in industrial salsa. I am 100% WFH and visit customers about a week out of the month. I love it. The amount of resources, time, etc spent actually going into an office is crazy to me when I can do the exact same thing from my house. Also more time with family.
I do realize that a lot of jobs cannot be done remotely.

We’re flex and hardly anyone works from home. I do once every couple of weeks and I’m really the only one that does. I’ll probably start working from home more now that it’s warming up though.

I officially “went back to the office” on Monday. All it means is that the two days I’m not in the field I spend at a place other than my home. It’s nice to be back in the office but I’ve got a newborn at home I’d rather spend more time with. But baby needs a roof.

quote:I moved into a new role mid-pandemic, and training was a joke. In lieu of flying into Atlanta and spending most of two months in hands-on instruction, we were relegated to a few days of online training for each subject area. We made the best of it, since travel was effectively impossible, but it was no substitute for in-person classes. Between that and only having access to co-workers via Teams or whatever, the transition was tough.
I don't see how you effectively train people

I love working remotely. I wouldn’t have it any other way to be honest.

I got a new job back in July of 2020. Same overall "office," just a different actual place/office. Ever since I came here I've been 100% full time in the office and I love it. But even to this day, damn near half the office is WFH, and it's weird. I always take different routes back to my office from the bathroom and most offices are empty. It's slowly filled back up, but I've heard rumblings that they will offer even more of a flex schedule with the interstate construction coming next year, so who knows.
But I had one lady here (she has since retired) in my office bitching to me about how when working from home she had to account for her time in a time sheet and include everything she did. She was livid that she had to do that, and her argument (to her manager, btw) was that her job is to review her documents and to be available for phone calls and emails, and she can do all of that at home and on her phone. I was like yeah, but by that token I can go plan golf every day and as long as I have my phone with me to answer calls and respond to emails, I'm good. Far too many people here want to WFH so that they can frick off. Most of the people that leave do so because they find new jobs that allow WFH full time. One girl just left last week and she said she found a new HR job for Ochsner that was 100% WFH, and she had "a bunch of projects" she's been wanting to do in their new house. So she literally left so that she can WFH at this new job and do home projects (i.e. not work. It's weird.
