going to a wedding tonight and I'm wondering what the protocol is for wearing suspenders with pants that have belt loops. Is that lame or will I be ok?

follow up question: never been to Houma before but that's where this wedding is. where should we get brunch tomorrow before we head back home to Nola

thanks in advance

IDK what the actual rule is, but to me suspenders are something that shouldn't be seen like garter belts, etc.

Either wear suspenders or a belt. Never both.

Copeland's for brunch.

that's obviously not going to happen, I was just wondering if it's considered giga trashy to wear it with regular khaki slacks that have belt loops. the reaction I'm getting seems to imply I'll be aight

Let’s get something straight.

Suspenders are the lengths of material that fasten to the pants via alligator clips or some other method of clamping to the waistband from the top. Those are what you wear on the farm or to go fishing. You don’t ever wear those in polite society. You can wear them with a belt or anything else that helps keep your pants, waders or whatever up.

Braces are the item that fasten to the inside of the pants via buttons. These are worn with suits, tuxedos and other fine garments. They are never ever ever worn with a belt. You may wear them on pants with belt loops as long as there isn’t a belt worn at the same time. Braces should be covered with a jacket for 90% of the evening and only exposed once the real drinking starts and the tie is loosened or taken off.

Wait, this is in Houma? Do whatever you want. No one will give a frick. There will likely be someone at the wedding in overalls and white plastic boots.

Contrary to the opinion of many here on the OT, dressing well is the mark of an adult man. It doesn’t make you a sissy. It doesn’t have to be expensive, brand name or the latest trend. But clean, pressed, well tailored clothes worn with care are what sets a Southern Gentleman apart from Yankees and trailer park trash.

Designer is a professional ...he/she/zhe put belt loops there for a purpose. You don't need to overthink it...just do what the designer intended

In 2019 it’s perfectly fine to wear a belt with suspenders. Many people do.

Just do a subtle colored belt to keep focus on suspenders

Does your pants have buttons to support the suspenders?

Suspended clips are trashy
